This is a tragedy of epic proportions.
Rav Shmuel Yehuda was a gadol in the prime of his life. He became rosh yeshiva of Telshe Chicago just four years ago, when his father Rav Avrohom Chaim was niftar, and he was leading the Yeshiva into a new era. He was vibrant, full of passion and love, adored by his talmidim and the wider city. His shiurim were a magnet for bochurim, and talmidim from years ago would continue to call him for his sage advice, even decades after leaving his shiur.
His galdus ba'Torah was unmatched and his dikduk ba'Mitzvos extraordinary, but perhaps what set him apart the most was his fiery intensity, driven by his unquenchable drive to further the Ratzon Hashem. It defined who he was and how he led his yeshiva, and his fire lit a drive in those around him to follow in his lofty footsteps.
He was at his peak, just 63 years old, full of strength and vigor, with no visible health concerns. He delivered a schmuess in yeshiva yesterday, then davened maariv for the amud. Shortly after, Hatzolah was called to his home, and his talmidim began reciting Tehillim in his yeshiva, to no avail. With unimaginable shock, news came out of the petirah of the venerated rosh yeshiva.
An inferno has been extinguished, and thousands of talmidim have been suddenly left in the dark, stumbling to find their way forward without his guiding light.
