Perhaps because of Tottenham Hotspur (a British soccer team)? Because they had so many Jewish fans, they started calling the players and fans Yids, Yiddos, or Yid Army, etc. But the word was also used by many as a slur, so there has been a longstanding argument about whether to use the term or not. May fans, Jews included, feel it is a positive, but many opposing fans use the term and create antisemitic cheers and songs. The club itself does not use the word and urges people not to.
Personally, I chose that team to support based purely on them being called the Yids. I didn't know it was a controversy till long after I was a fan.
