Pain after fasting
« on: August 07, 2022, 08:25:04 PM »
At the end of the fast, when I start eating/drinking, I get this incredible pressure/pain in the roof of my mouth (palette?). Googling this, it seems I'm not the only one, but I've yet to find an explanation or solution.

Does anyone here experience this, and can anyone offer solutions?

Yes. I've found that hydrating (water!) before eating helps with this. Also eating slowly.

Try breaking the fast on a glass of tea.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Yes!  Thought it was just me. Seems to depend on kind of food.  Orange juice is bad, chicken soup is good, but I'm not sure what the general rule would be.  Avoid acid? Have something hot?  Or salty?

Pace yourself.  Eat slowly.  Drink a cup of water over 10-15 min, then have something bland, maybe a bowl of soup or slice of bread or baked potato or rice.  But don't scarf it down.  The digestive enzymes go on holiday when you don't eat all day, and need time to get back up to speed.

I've had this occasionally. I have heard that it's from dehydration

Don't eat anything sweet or cold for the first 30 minutes or so. Just a few cups of water.

Is it the salivary glands going into overdrive?
My Tapatalk notifications don't always work.

I think it has to do with acid. Pallete takes a little while to get used to feeling it again. I get it if I don't pace myself. I think ice cream or ginger tea might help

Is it the salivary glands going into overdrive?
This makes sense.  The major salivary glands are under the tongue and in the cheek area, but there are small salivary or mucous glands in the hard and soft palate, buried within the muscle tissue.  If these glands fill with newly-made secretions faster than they can release secretions into the mouth, then the glands will swell up.  They don't have a lot of room to expand, so that may be causing the pressure and pain, which is relieved relatively quickly (10 minutes?) as the secretions move out.

Maybe plain water is a weaker stimulus for these secretions than the acid/salt/sugar/fat chemicals in our food, and this could explain why drinking water first after the fast prevents the development of pain that occurs when we eat other foods first.

We are dehydrated after a fast, and it's good to rehydrate right away, but I don't see how the pain in the palate would be related to overall dehydration/rehydration.

I was taught to rinse my mouth before breaking the fast. Yesterday I was in a hurry so didn’t rinse and the pain started as soon as I started eating. I immediately stopped and rinsed thoroughly and was fine after that.

Don’t know the science behind this but it works 100% for me

I drank slowly for at least 10 minutes, was fine...started eating - intense pain.

I totally relate to that. Next time try thoroughly rinsing your mouth prior to eating and report back
