I don’t agree with minimizing what she did. She made a very stupid mistake and shouldn’t feign innocence. (And no, after hearing what happened, it’s actually not the same as having something in your transferred luggage during a two hour stopover. I don’t read the laws of the country when I remain in the airport.)
*Also*, 9 years for this “crime” seems incredibly unreasonable, although of course it s a foreign country and we don’t (and shouldn’t) get to decide the laws of a foreign country. We should, however, lobby on behalf of a U.S. citizen when we feel she is being held unjustly. It’s worse than usual since our relations with this country are very strained right now, to say the least.
*Also*, our criminal justice system has many issues of its own that need addressing, although I’d like to believe it serves its purpose better than many other systems including Russia’s.
