This thread gives a much more likely and balanced view of what likely went on yesterday.

This SEARCH was conducted in a legal and respectful manner.
lol it’s one & the same. A raid requires a “search” warrant.

most news outlets are using the word raid, from the NYT to the BBC. Even blatantly LW pubs like the New Yorker. How do you explain them using raid when the warrant said search?

This argument is so beyond stupid.
This only emphasizes why we need to be careful in our word choice.  The night it happened, and the next morning, the news media pundits were calling it a search, and explaining what's involved in getting a search warrant.  It was Trump who chose the word raid, with its more objectionable connotation.  Here are the instances of the words used in the NPR article from that morning, where you can see that they used "search" and only the Trumps used "raid".  But, as you say, the Trump choice of terms insidiously made their way into the national discourse, such that now even NPR is using the the word raid.

Former President Donald Trump said on Monday that FBI agents had searched his Mar-a-Lago club and residence in Palm Beach, Fla., and opened his safe.

.... Eric Trump said Monday night that he was told the search was related to...

"The purpose of the raid was, from what they said, was because ...," the former president's son told Fox News.

The younger Trump said he got a call about the search being executed on Monday morning...  first-hand accounts of how the search was conducted were not available.

The search, which would have required a court order from a federal judge, signals ....

In a statement put out by his political action committee, Trump said Mar-a-Lago was "under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents."

"After working and cooperating with the relevant government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate," the statement said.

Search would likely need top DOJ approval

..., the search marks a significant step. .

A search of a former president's home would ...had signed off on the Mar-a-Lago search.

A White House official said they did not receive notice of the search, ...

Trump's announcement of the search sparked a firestorm on the right....

Can you answer this since I have my paintbrush out?   :)

Lol, I grew up in South Africa, what we called a raid as kids in regard to pranks has nothing to do with what Americans call FBI raids or searches.

As for your other question, sure, I agree raid sounds more intense/violent/invasive/whatever than search. It's also a perfectly legitimate word to use for the FBI or any LE executing a search even without strewn property, drawn weapons, or the like, and using raid isn't necessarily indicative of anyone trying to exaggerate or lie. As can be seen clearly here that virtually all the media used the word raid to describe the FBI executing the search warrant.

If you want to portray Trump as a baby or a liar you don't need to use the word raid to do that. Trying to manufacture this controversy over the usage of raid just hurts legitimate claims as it makes them all seem as disingenuous as the "raid" one.

If anything is going to be touched & removed during the raid then a search warrant is needed. Correct or not ?

Fair enough. Since you are being openminded let me ask you this. I believe if this search was on BO house most in this thread would call it a search and not a raid. You agree?  :)

https://www.npr.org/2022/08/09/1116575413/mar-a-lago-fbi-raid-trump-search

Monday's FBI raid on the home of former President Donald Trump — including his safe, according to Trump — has raised eyebrows and questions about what the search could indicate about a possible criminal investigation into the former president and those around him.

The raid concerned presidential records that Trump removed from the White House when he left office in January 2021, according to Christina Bobb, an attorney representing Trump.

...
Read on for more about what the raid tells us about the legal questions at stake.

...

We don't know yet what exactly the FBI recovered in the raid. But the search is likely related to the 15 boxes of presidential documents that were removed from Mar-a-Lago earlier this year by the National Archives and Records Administration.

...
It's possible that Monday's raid was conducted to recover those remaining documents.

...
Besides the federal judge who approved the warrant, the raid likely needed sign-off by the director of the FBI himself — Christopher Wray,

...

The White House says it was not involved in the raid. "The president and the White House learned about this FBI search from public reports. (Note how they use raid and switch to search for the quote)

....

The DOJ has not commented about the raid or investigation. Experts pointed to at least two possible issues that could be under criminal investigation.
...

The raid is "a very big deal historically," Wehle said. On the other hand ("Raid" isn't part of the quote, but even if it is, it shows others not in the Trump camp are using it too besides NPR.)

....
Politically speaking, the raid comes as the Jan. 6 hearings have already caused some damage to the former president's reputation

...
After Monday's raid, many Republicans are rallying around Trump

Give it up.

Not. You can remove things during a search without raiding a home. The purpose of a search is to touch and remove items.

I agree that people might switch their opinions on the correct usage of the word, you included. It would just depend on how the "narrative" developed. His detractors might be more inclined to call it a raid to show that he must be involved in something extra nefarious, and his fans might call it a search for the same reason.
