What percentage of our community do you think is regularly getting inebriated between the ages of 20-25? What percentage of those people go on to operate motor vehicles in an inebriated state? How do you think these numbers compare to the general population?
What percentage of our community do you think is regularly getting high on narcotics or mind altering substances (including marijuana) between the ages of 20-25? How do you think that compares to the general population?
What percentage of our community do you think is regularly viewing inappropriate materials to the degree that is deleterious to their spiritual growth between the ages of 20-25? How do you think that compares to the general population?
Judging by the percentages in each of the above responses, which issue do you think is the most prevalent in our community, and should therefore require the most focus?
I think all 3 behavioral issues listed can be dealt with under one theme. Personal responsibility and self harm.
(It's the theme I use to talk to my kids. Mostly about porn - it's bad for your outlook on life and potentially harmful to your marriage. It requires self control, but gets harder once you start. It gives short term pleasure, but long term harm.
Drinking- loss of self control and possibly self respect. We model responsible drinking ( we like beer, wine and spirits)at home, and plan which one of us is driving home when we're drinking at a party.
Drugs- we're firmly anti cigarette, for health and smell reasons. We've talked about drugs, but not as much.)
So to your question, which vice to concentrate on?
I don't think they're separate issues.
personal responsibility: We need to stop babying our adult children - start when they're younger. Make them own their behavior - none of the "sheifele you didn't mean it, say you're sorry and it all goes away. "
self harm: These behaviors are only temporarily pleasurable, but cause you damage you don't really want.
