We pay taxes that fund public school students at a cost of $24,583 per student. We are requesting vouchers for private school children at a cost of $13,340 per child. Why isn’t that fair? Each child that doesn’t go to public school saves the district more than the cost of private school.

These numbers are taken directly from the uenj.org website.
Of course it's fair, but you need to sell it to the world at large.  The ads I saw talk about the high tuition rates and say we need help. Made me cringe.

What do you think that will look like in most small mesivtas?
Is there a reason why we have 57,000 mesivtas? Why can't there be a few big ones with multiple shiurim? It worked until 10 years ago.

My experience is that the local GED programs are better than most mesivta English programs.

But how does an average bachur make time for it, and still do well in yeshiva?

(I only care about it because of my own kids, otherwise I couldn't care less...)

Once a week on Friday or motzei shabbos.

This is my experience with 3 boys. 2 went to a Friday program and one had in mesivta.

I'm all for this if it forces mesivtas to teach secular studies

From looking into this for the first time now for my son, it seems like the only way to have a high level of learning with a decent secular studies department is to send out of town.

I'm passionate about getting a secular education for my sons. I don't like the trend of the past 10 years where they cut it out of mesivtas.

My hope is that since this isn't a communal "shitah" (like chassidishe communities), rather just inertia - that it would be easier to get mesivtas to offer it again.

There are a handful of exceptions depending on the boy but mostly true.

True even in the “high level English” Lakewood mesivtas. That being said, the vast majority of smart litvish Lakewood boys who read extensively outside of school do just fine when/ if they have to obtain a degree later on in life.
