If we agree the NYT was a hit piece this then boils down to if the state/gov should require basic studies in school or should it be left up to the parents?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

They can require all they want, but the more the state meddles, the less chance anything will change. It will only solidify the status quo.
For better and for worse, we always have been and always will be a stiff necked people. :)

After all this it comes down to one simple fact/view. That is all I am pointing out.

Ok, Dan let's be real I'm going to assume you probably didn't go to a chasidish yeshiva (many lubvitch yeshivas don't count as chassidish yeshiva in the context of this discussion).

As mentioned, the largest Chabad boys' school in CH has ZERO secular studies. One of the anecdotes used in the story is about a graduate of the school.

their SAT score would most likely be abysmal. It's a sad state of affairs.
It's only sad if you consider SAT scores to be a barometer of happiness.

NYT is of course the optimity of anti-semites but that's a separate discussion.

The NYT is literally the title and point of this thread.

That is correct but the real issue is should the state/gov decide or the parents.

@Dan CMIIW but you studied on your own time for the SAT and your HS math probably didn't help all that much?
For the past bunch of years, PIT integrated psats.
Math in PIT was also pretty decent, depending on the year.
History on the other hand... :)
Wasn't English "ma lotov"? :)

This is probably true, though it may also be timed to coincide with the first day of school, since the BoR meeting agenda was announced just a few days ago.  So what?  Timing is important in media - They publish honey cake recipes to coincide with Rosh Hashana.
What did I say?
honey cake, reminiscent of fluden
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/13/dining/hungarian-jewish-honey-cake.html

challah with honey, and cinnamon babka too
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/12/dining/challah-recipe.html

Cultural appropriation. No mention of hafrashas challah.  Antisemitim!

For those of us who don't care to read Yaffed's entire drivel, kindly quote any specific reference when you refer to the story.

I hesitate to do this, because quite obviously this person had a very rough go of it, and I'm not looking to turn him into the subject of mockery or derision. But it was published in a much-hyped story in the biggest newspaper...

Quote
Mendy Pape said he left a Hasidic neighborhood in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, for Montreal in 2010. He got a job at a bagel factory, but, unable to afford an apartment, he slept on park benches. Despairing, he tried to take his own life.
After six months in a psychiatric hospital, Mr. Pape said he recovered enough to find work and an apartment. A neighbor started to teach him English in her spare time, he said, and gave him his first secular book: “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. He was 28.
Now a nursing school graduate, Mr. Pape said he believes his Hasidic education was designed to keep him from leaving the community.
“I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have a bank account, I didn’t have references. I didn’t have any of that because I didn’t even know what any of that was,” he said. “I had no knowledge really of how to speak to people. I thought I was all on my own. That’s the idea I was given in school.”

One can validate his experience without believing that it is what actually occurred. This is typical Yaffed trope; that Chassidish people cannot interact with others because they don't learn secular studies. Hogwash!

If you would know his family, and the school in question, your statement would be even stronger. I have no idea what his personal story is, but knowing some of his siblings, he comes from a family of highly talented, intelligent, and successful people.

BTW that school, that teaches ZERO English studies, produces the largest number of successful Shluchim.

Indeed, but I mentioned Shluchim as it is the antithesis to "Chassidish people cannot interact with others because they don't learn secular studies"

not everything that's technically true needs to be pointed out.
Greenberg made a good point, which there was no reason for the attorney to rebut

I cannot believe that story. his father is actually a languages professor, actively involved in publishing some of Chabad flagship material for children in English.
does he expect me to believe he never read the Moshiach Times?
