And now we are down to 2 hours per mezuzah, so @yfr bachur let's up a sofer's salary to $500k+ 🤣

Context. Are all mezuzos equal? Is 2 hours a mivtzoim mezuzah or a mehudar one? Big or small? This is why unqualified random pieces of info in layman's hands is a bad thing ;)

Are a lot of sofrim going to Mikva Meir? Maybe that's affecting the pricing...  :o

Not only that, the sofrim are makpid on שי טבילות and

Part of the price are the local dealers.
I just bought 16 very mehuder mezuzos that sells here in the US for $275 each for just $145 each directly from the sofer in Natanya
I’m in shape, round is a shape…

I have heard that there is a major increase in demand for sifrei torah and therefore a shortage of mezuzos
I run a tefillin project where we buy tefillin for those just beginning their interest in yiddishkeit and want to wear tefillin and I’ve run into this issue as well. The sofrim are busy writing sifrei torah. Is was worse a few months back and has gotten better. I’ve also seen a slight bump in price but not too much(for peshutos)

so is it that the price of materials went up, the price of labor went up, or is it just stam inflation?

Was waiting to see who was going to post that when I made the title :)

I thought this was a new thread now that we disproved hyperinflation

Add to the inflation a home visit that discovered additional places requiring a mezuzah (where it's probably not even needed).

So, your math just jumped to about $114,400/year or more if they want to work 10 hours a day and sunday and motzei shabbos that number can go to $250,000+
Why do you think that the 5 (or 8, if you must insist) does not include working these time???
It's impossible to write that much a day mehudar. Maybe mivtzoim mezuzas, maybe... not mehudar, not in a million years.

Not sure I follow.

Based on what I read in this thread. Mezuzah costs $150 sofer gets $100. Mezuzah costs $275 sofer get $100.

Sure seems there is no relation.
You guys complaining are throwing random numbers at the wall and complaining when the price changes.
I did not see anyone on this post or anywhere else say that no part of the increase went to the sofer.
It could be argued (and i am) that the sofrim were underpaid to start.
EVERYONES cost of living has gone up - the sofer, the klaf maker, the maagiim, the stores, and any middlemen that there may be.
Quote
Not to mention at first a sofer can do 5 max per week now they can do 8 per week, that changes the math a ton. Also these guys with back pains, do they work out in general?
up to 8 average it out over a year and mehudar sofrim are doing closer to 5 per week.
No writing on YT and chol hamoed, taanisim 3-4 weeks of no writing . Before YT prodution rate may go down anyway  becuase they have yt prep to take care of.
personal days when they need to take care of family or personal issues - no work no income.
days when the weather conditions are not conducive to writing - wrong humidity levels
Time to choose klaf - its a skill, every sofer has his particular preferences in how
etc etc etc ורבות הם ואי אפשר לפרטם

I'll do you a favor, if you want I'll go round to the sofrim who sit in the area of the mir and take an unscientific poll of how many they produce a week...
Quote
And FTR I know many people who sit with just moving there hands and eyes for 14+ hours a day 6 days a week, they are called lawyers.

I guess the posture is different though?
Yes. and people binge watching TV. but they aren't producing intricately  detailed tiny, halachikly complex works of art.
Quote
Also I can't believe I got dragged into this about sofrim when all this thread is for, is the price increase and why it happened. I love sofrim and think they should be paid well for a vital service to our community.
OK if you think so, what should they be paid? What is an acceptable markup for the local retailer? The answer to this directly affects the price of a given piece of stam.

Anyway, point of this thread was never what a sofer's salary should be or not.
DDF 2022 Why are there never any price mistake deals on Mezuzas posted? :)
At the end of the day, your complaint is on the sofer, (or your local retailer) for making too much money
Quote
But by all means start a Jewish salary thread for .... mashgichim etc.
I think that one may be this:

you should be less effected by the ST writers, as generally pesutos writers are not writng sifrei torah.

September 2017 ILS to USD: $0.29.
September 2022 ILS to USD: $0.30.
From someone whose financial savvy I respect, thats about the least enlightening or releveant statistic you could post.
in that time, the USD to ILS rate (which is the one i see) has been as high as 3.8 and as low as 3.08
So say the sofer bought the hides in USD when the the exchange rate was disavantagous to him (3.8 ), and the sofer sells the compleated mezuza back to the us when the rate is disavantagous to him (3.1)...

Why

Dude, you can harp on any of these topics all day, you have completely missed the point. A question was asked why the price jumped so sharply. Your answer needs to be about something that changed that much in the last year or two. Cost of living went up by 100%? The same back breaking labor you are talking about was happening 3 years ago as well, it doesn't explain the prices almost doubling.

Like I asked before, what percentage of the cost is the klaf?
And can I assume prices will go down now that the exchange rate has as well? ;D

Jewflation is a multiple of broader inflation, I’m not sure the exact number but it’s significant.

going to the mikvah for a daily dip became an activity for millionaires. Far outpacing the STA"M inflation IINM.

it seems that a new millionaire luxury is having a mikva installed in your basement.

That is no longer for millionaires. Covid-19 has taught everyone a thing or two.

Mehudur Alter Rebbe ksav large mezuzos have gone from ~$150 to ~$275 over the past 5 years.
What's the justification for this?

Just got back my mezuzos from checking. Replacing a few. Quoted $250 for Arizal or $350 for AR!

The guy told me that they would have made a fortune if they would have spent the entire covid-19 time accumulating stock at the pre-covid prices.

He tells me the price of klaf also increased significantly.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

What did/does such a pair sell for?
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

It seems that the cost of checking tefilin and mezuzos in CH has gone up (even more than last year).

Im getting that 1 mezuzah is $10 and 1 Pair of teffilin is $85-100.

What will be next year.

Cross posting to the correct thread.
