Local and/or state laws regarding car seats and child restraint systems (booster seats).

New York's Occupant Restraint laws require the following:

  • Children up to the age of 4 must be properly restrained in a federally approved child safety seat that is attached to a vehicle by a seat belt or universal child restraint anchorage (LATCH) system.
  • Children less than age 4 but weighing more than 40 poundsmay be restrained in a booster seat with a lap/shoulder safety belt. However, a child safety seat that accommodates higher weights can be used.
  • Children ages 4, 5, 6 and 7 must be properly secured in an appropriate child restraint system, one for which the child meets the height and weight recommendations of the child restraint manufacturer.*
  • An appropriate child restraint system is one that meets the child's size and weight recommended by the manufacturer.
  • A vehicle's safety belt is NOT a child restraint system.
  • Children riding in booster seats must be secured with a combination lap/shoulder seat belt, NEVER secure a child in a booster seat with only a lap belt.
  • From the age of 8 until they reach their 16th birthday, children must be restrained in a seat belt whenever they ride in a vehicle. All Front seat passengers must be properly restrained at all times, regardless of age.
  • Children 12 years and younger should ride in the back seat. By simply buckling up your child in the back seat reduces his/her risk of death by 33%.

*It is recommended that booster seats be used until your child is 4 foot 9 inches tall or weighs 100 pounds.[/li][/list]

Chicco NextFit

I narrowed it down to Chicco NextFit and Maxi Cosi Pria 70.

I'm looking for a double carriage and an infant seat that hooks into it. I'd prefer side by side. Any ideas please let me know. I was looking at the citi mini and the britax but open to others. Thanks.

I ended up buying the Peg Prego Viaggo Convertible. I really loved all the reviews and it looked like a nice geshmak car seat.  The issue is that I could not figure out why it only reclined very slightly, not enough for my 10 month old to sleep comfortably on a long car ride. And certainly not enough for a newborn. This is a major problem for me as we drive a lot. I read up on this issue and it seems people roll up a towel to make the car seat level so it reclines further. Obviously it is quite ridiculous to keep a towel rolled up underneath a car seat just to have it recline. I am going to return it and try the Chicco NextFit.

I have a britax roundabout and a cosco scenera. I am looking for car seats for my new car. I would get two scenera's but at least one of my daughters will soon grow out of it. I am looking for something like the scenera-safe, cheap and light but with a higher weight capacity-recommendations?

+1 on the quality of the car seat, but -1 on it being lightweight. Walmart lists the shipping weight on the Scenera as 11lbs and the Momentum as 25lbs. Granted you're not going to find a full size convertible at 11lbs, but I don't think the Momentum is exactly lightweight.

I have the Symphony, which is basically the same as the Momentum except it adds a booster mode. The LATCH connectors are fantastic, they click in easily and you just push the whole seat down to tighten it (there's some sort of automatic crank), then press a one touch button to release. Still not sure whether it was worth the extra money over the Momentum, but it has since been paid for by insurance after a near standstill accident, so at this point I don't really care.

Maybe I'll get one more scenera (then I'll have two for travel) and them either the evenflo or the britax roundabout 50. Have to figure out how I can use the Walmart amex credit twice on one $150 order

Update:
I bought the NextFit and so far I love it! Took it on 2 road trips already and my baby slept the entire way bothh times. In the PP she woke up crying a handful of times each way.

if a car seat is the same price on amazon and in buybuybaby (since now there is 20% off for both),
1. should I buy on amazon or bbb?
2. use gift cards or amex?
3. is there a difference between buying on buybuybaby or bedbath?
4. is there a way to get free shipping from bbb?

I have the Diono Radian RXT and I like it a lot!
I've been looking through the offerings in the current Amazon Mom Appreciation Event and then checking back in this thread to see the Consumer Report ratings and people's comments. I see that the Radian is not listed in the ratings. Anyone know why?

MarkS, how does it compare to the more standard type of convertibles? If I bought it I'd probably be moving my 21 month old into it and my younger son into the convertible we already have (Evenflo Symphony). He doesn't really need to be forward facing yet as he's well under 40lbs and doesn't complain about facing backwards. Is the Radian good for that position? It seems very tall, which might not fit well in a midsize sedan when rear-facing.
