I have it included as part of my Verizon phone plan. Yes, for a landline.

I have Optimum. I don't need to call international too often, but when I do, I just pick up the phone and dial direct. The rates are pretty reasonable, and I don't call every day, so the convenience is worth the extra few sense I may be able to save with a card.

My personal setup is with Google voice, I don't remember exactly how to set it up but I remember that it was slightly complicated (it involved using legacy voice, not sure if that still exists). The basic idea is that you call your GV number from any phone and access the voicemail, from there you can make a call and their rates are pretty reasonable.

It's probably been discussed somewhere in the GV thread @Yisroel Tech @Alexsei ?

This approach isn't any different than using a calling card

In that case you might be better off with something like RebTel, KeepCalling or whatever service has competitive rates for your destinations

RebTel also allows you to set-up direct local numbers for your frequent contacts, extremely useful

Verizon Fios includes Canada and you can choose 1 or 2 free international countries at least in some plans.

Yes, mobile is back up to 10¢ but landline is 2¢ which I'm happy with (was 1¢ for a while but it went back up).

Right. I don't have any experience with calling cards, but I have had this setup for years and it works great for me

That can be a huge time saver. The one pain with GV is that it takes so long every time you want to make a call.

Just a helpful hint: inserting a Pause (P or ,) in the contact info on your phone between the calling-card/google number, the access code and the number can save you time when dialing.
For example: If your calling card number is 1800-123-4567 your access code is 4321 and your bubby's number is 01197298765432, you can save your contact as: Bubby: 18001234567,4321,01197298765432
