Comma 3 OpenPilot
« on: December 03, 2022, 06:34:54 PM »
Has anybody tried here Comma.ai as a alternative to the tesla or super cruise? I’m not that interested in a electric car as i drive long distance often and the super cruise models are very expensive. The comma.ai basically plugs into any existing car and turns it into self drive. It’s compatible with 200 different cars and works with the existing adaptable cruise control and stay in lane assist.

I was wondering about this too. I know there are plenty of YouTube videos but was curious if any forum members have used it.
My main question is  if there are any data points about insurance coverage being affected (if for example cv”s an accident occurs and insurance investigates and discovers the comma.ai product was being used they can refuse to pay claim etc.)

There is some discussion of this on another thread. I have it on my Highlander and love it.

Is a pain in the neck to install. Many wouldn't be able to install on their own.

@jackofall does it take you on a pre planned route or just straight on a highway? Also does it switch lanes for you?

Good for highway. Doesn't really chage lanes.

Thanks! saw this a while back. Was wondering if there is anything more extensive on the point than this. Comma.ai's website is also a bit sparse on it. That's really what's been holding me back- fear of insurance complications... Also, Toyota Avalon 2017 doesn't get full functionality unless I disable some of the inbuilt safety features (there is an additional mod to help for that point but that looks a bit sketchy...)

I'm trying to understand what it means for Honda Odyssey owners that the ACC is minimum 25 mph and no steering torque

Thanks for starting this thread! Looks very cool, now I'm thinking about it for myself, although the price tag seems a really steep for a cool gizmo, I don't think I drive nearly enough to justify that spend. What was the price historically and what are the chances it comes down in the near future?

I doubt prices will go down, unless they had a bf/cm deal.
Maybe pre-owned?

ETA, the source code is open source you can expect that at some point there will be a competitive market for hardware

Was $250 off during BF. I ordered one today , even found a guy in lakewood who installed a few. He told me he only heard good stuff about it. Got the cheapest one as didn't see a point for the more expensive more GB versions.

Would love to hear your experience. Who installs in Lakewood, CSO? Also is your car by any chance a Toyota curious how the stock braking system works with the comma.ai system.

Per their training:
openpilot is a level 2 DRIVER ASSISTANCE system. It cannot drive on it's own and will never be able to drive on it's own. If it's not driving how you would like, you are responsible for correcting it. If this is something we aren't communicating well, we are very interested in fixing that. This isn't some wink wink nudge nudge crap.

We have a 30-day no questions asked money back guarantee, I suggest you take advantage of it. We would much rather that anyone who isn't ready to quickly correct any mistakes or thinks this is a self driving car not use it, as you are a hazard to yourself and others on the road.

Having ~95% of the driving taken care of sounds like sitting in the passenger seat when driving with a new driver, who still needs some instruction/oversight. Cool technology but hardly chill!

Google "accidents with comma.ai" and read some critiques before you buy.

BTW - Do car insurance providers provide a discount or charge a premium if you have this?

True but I wouldn’t sit in the passenger  seat of a Tesla either. It’s meant to take off the strain of driving long distance.
