Look at the benchmarks and get back to me.
I see. Why is it that with those massive increases in TDP and clock speed over the 165H it barely gets any real-world gains?

The same reason why two computers with the same specs perform wildly differently - the real settings on the wattage set by the manufacturer, and the robustness (or lack thereof) of the cooling inside the computer. Even the benchmarks don't tell the whole story. One rule of thumb is that almost always, a thin and light system will be thermally restrained. I think that the 185H seems to almost always be implemented in thin and light systems (such as the Swift), and that explains why it tends to benchmark lower.

So on laptop like this it could be a better deal? I'm aware its probably plastic.

Maybe, but without data points on the actual model, it is hard to know for certain. However, I never post high-power plastic models as deals, because most people do not require anything near that level of performance, and there are sufficiently-powered metal models for cheaper. Moreover, for someone who DOES require that level of performance, they are better off getting something that definitely has robust cooling - like gaming laptops.

Just for one example, this MSI computer occupies the top few spots on PCBenchmark, even though it has an older processor. I assume the cooling in it can keep up better.

And MSI laptops have all ten of the top slots.

Should I be worried about compatibility problem before recommending a snapdragon laptop?
If yes for what usage, I understand for regular office work there's nothing to worry about, but could it happen that e.g. a device driver wouldn't work? What about programs, does the emulator work well or are there hitches?

I haven't heard about driver issues, so unless you use a strange piece of hardware, you should be okay. Regarding software, they all "work" but the performance takes a significant hit to do so. If you have heavy software, you should look into if there was an Arm version written, and if not, stay away.
Regardless, I wouldn't consider unless the computer is so much better / cheaper than a Lunar Lake version without the above issues.

Many Canon printer drivers seem to not have ARM versions, and not work in compatibility mode. Its fine if you can use the generic Microsoft Drivers, but for some users this may be an issue.
