This is probably the answer to your question in the OP.

If someone named their kid after a person whose name was Menachem, but was called Mendel, they would give both names to honor the person.

If they were honoring someone who was named Menachem and Called Mendel, wouldn't the same apply here? (i.e. call him menachem at his bris, and mendel everywhere else).

A few weeks ago, there was a thread where someone asked about how to spell a certain name in Hebrew. That thread devolved into a discussion of various Hebrew names, and I asked a question about the "Yiddish Double Entendre" and it's sources, but didn't get an answer. Figured I'd give it a shot to ask again.

What do I mean by "Yiddish Double Entendre": People who have a Hebrew and Yiddish name that essentially mean the same thing:
Menchem Mendel
Yitzchok Azik
Nosson Nuta
Aryeh Leib
Kalonimus Kalman (although Kalonimus isn't hebrew)
Tzvi Hersh
Dov Ber

My questions:
- When and why did this start?
- How come it's for some names and not others? (For example, I've never met someone named Mordechai Mottel, or Yaakov Yankel)
- Are there any examples of women's names that fit this pattern?

Somebody clearly has no idea what “double entendre” means. 🤣
