Child Savings Fund for Wedding
« on: December 12, 2022, 08:55:48 PM »
Anyone with recommendations for a fund to allocate money each year towards a wedding fund?
Basically I want to put away 1-2 K a year towards a Childs wedding fund.
Always praying for delayed baggage.

Are you OK with some risk? How many years you looking at?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

A S&P 500 index fund is pretty standard.

any risk besides that at the time that the money is needed the market may be down?

That's about it. You would need to change your strategy the closer you get to the wedding.

Ok with risk?
Start from now. tell yourself and your kid, this wedding will cost $20,000 all in.

They have retirement target funds, that merge from volatile to stable investments as the target date approaches. Realistically, though, a standard index fund may be better for hitting your target numbers. Assuming 5% post inflation growth a year doesn't seem to be unrealistically ambitious, so $1500 annually should provide $50k 2022 dollars, which is currently enough to fairly reasonably make a wedding and start off a couple in many demographics.

That’s not nearly enough for a wedding today, let alone in 20 years.

It may be just barely enough worth everything done bare bones.

It is also dependent on family size and composition. With many girls in the family, costs go up as it's simply more expensive to get female siblings ready than male siblings.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

In my opinion if you'd marry off your child today you'd spend today's "standard" you will need a lot more than that when the time comes.

for standard inflation or because today's "luxury" is tomorrows "standard"?

What I meant to say is that if you don't see another way besides going with what's " standard " you will obviously need a lot more at that point, and inflation is part of it, but more importantly it's the standards that is constantly upgraded. Vs if you could say today, I'll marry off according to my own budget and saving goals

I guess the exception would be if when the time comes it will be anything like the spring of 2020.
