Any program to match up roommates?

Is there any program or system I can use to match up roommates based on submitted requests?

For example, can I feed in 100 names, each with the 5 people they requested as possible roommates (in order of preference), and have the computer assign the rooms?

To explain further:

Ben requested 1) Abe, 2) Jerry, 3) Yaakov, 4) Shimon, or 5) Mordechai

and Abe requested...

There are x beds in each room. Match them up based on preference!

Not a joke! It seems like it can actually do it, but I would have to feed in all the data manually, and I'm not sure if it would have real results or just make up data. A small sampling worked well so far.

ETA: A second attempt failed to provide good results.

Just my 2c, but I'd start in the reverse. See which names are picked by the least amount of people or not picked at all, place those people with names you choose manually, and move up from there.

I'm trying to think how this would work. Each person would have 5 choices worth 1 to 5 points each. Then there would be a total score. Maybe would need a count of how many people requested that person ( I'm not sure).

Then if the overall score goes up or stays the same then swap positions.

Go through all people and try to swap this way. Do it 100 times (or really any amount of times) and then print the results.

This is just my thoughts. Not sure if this is a good option. Don't know if I need to keep track of individual totals. This won't either be a perfect result but I guess the more times I iterate the better it will get. If I have time I can try to write something.
