Oh, and anytime s/o says inlaws , Iask "inlaws or outlaws?"

As one of my mentors in the estate planning field used to say "it's all about the in-laws and the outlaws".
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I had a comeback that I'm not going to use....

It's Yemei Chanukah, not Aseres Yemei Teshuva. You're supposed to lighten up. But go ahead and take the fun out of it  :P

Of course shvigger.
Mommy feels gross.

Obviously it's cultural.

Exactly.

I'm trying to understand what people's problem is with Shvigger that they had to go take a word that does not mean that .

Shvigger to many is the but of the worst jokes, a stereotypical shrew.

As confused as you are about why someone would be offended by shvigger, seeing you get all hot and bothered by someone calling their MIL mommy is hilarious.

Shvigers can always work hard to be a nice shviger, thus making the shviger word more classy and not derogatory. :)

Another viewpoint to help people feel less uncomfortable with the concept:

The matriarch of a family's title is Mommy. Calling her that if you're married into the family doesn't mean that you're calling her your mother, it's just her title.

It is. Nevertheless, the question was asked.
Harder to understand is why people don't like the answers of other people...

I last posted before I went to sleep, and even though some didn't like my answer, someone else already answered what I would have answered, so...

Sounds like this belongs in "Are we going too Far" thread.

All this gender fluidity started from calling a Shvigger, Mommy.  :P :P :P
"shmuelie's house has two mommies, Levi's house has two Tatties" how progressive we are

I don't think "your mother said" sounds quite as nice as "mommy said", etc. It puts you and your spouse on the same team with the same sets of parents.

/.02
The problem I had with that, it meant that I was saying "mommy" when referring to mother-in-law and "my mother" when referring to my mother

Meh. Let's go Fahrdrei the Yoitzrois because someone (?) doesn't like being called Shvigger.

Again, it’s you that changed it so as not to offend your sensibilities, not the other way around :)

Let's go Fahrdrei the Yoitzrois because someone thinks calling their mother in law mommy means he thinks she is his actual mother

Jewish tradition says spouses are two parts of the same soul, so technically in-laws have actually raised "the other part of your soul", supporting the use of Mommy/Totty.

I wonder whether people who accept/accepted financial support from their in-laws are more comfortable with, and more commonly use, Mommy/Totty (or equivalent). It may make that feel less awkward/humbling.

I also wonder if the discomfort expressed above is partially a sensitivity between opposite genders (men calling MIL Mom),
I.e. whether men feel equally awkward calling their father-in-law Totty/Dad/Abba Etc,
And whether women feel as awkward calling FIL Dad.

My spouse was the oldest in-law child. My parents were NOT happy to be called shver and shvigger, but no way was it going to be Mommy and Tatty. PS-no one else called them that; but out of all the in-laws, my spouse probably has the best relationship with them!
On the subject of awkward nouns, it doesn't get worse than "my spouse"......

Insert "new son in law thinks I'm Hashem" joke.
