Yeshiva scholarships?
« on: January 16, 2023, 07:54:01 PM »
Hey everyone. I was thinking of enrolling my children into yeshiva and wanted to know if there are any scholarships that could assist. I don’t know how many do it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I don't know your situation. But njfce/released time and lman acahai have some scholarships if one is moving their child from public school to a yeshiva (in the new York area).

If they are coming from a public school, I think there are a number of schools that would be willing to take them at a reduced rate, or perhaps completely free. I'm not an expert in this, and I'm sure others here can chime in. One place that comes to mind (if your location is Brooklyn as your bio indicates) is Be'er Hagolah. Phone number (718) 642-6800.

Correct. I am in Brooklyn.
Thinking of transferring them from public school to yeshiva, but have a few specific yeshivas in mind. Would also prefer those that take education seriously. I know of Be’er Hagolah, but not what I had in mind.

I don’t mind paying, but when tuition is almost $20,000 per child, with 3 kids, that comes out to be quite expensive.

Depending on the family size, income, and if both parents are working you may be eligible for NYC vouchers https://access.nyc.gov/programs/child-care-voucher/#determine-your-eligibility

Thank you and everyone else for these helpful links and resources. I truly hope it will be helpful to others in similar situation as us. Many people are ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help or suggestions. Trust me… I am and have been for years, but finally decided to push myself and ask as this is my kids future. It’s the future of Yiddishkeit.

Thanks to hashem we are not eligible for those vouchers, but honestly doing the math at home, having 3 kids in Yeshiva would lead us living almost paycheck to paycheck after all expenses.

That’s a scary thought as well in case something happens with our health or jobs.

I don’t have any specific information regarding scholarships but I would think you could start talking to the schools you are interested in and see what they can offer you. Many schools will work with you regarding tuition-not all- but maybe that will narrow it down for you, as well.

$20k/each for 3 children sounds like something you can negotiate down from, even at good schools.

+1.

In Lakewood, many solid schools charge in the range of $4,000 per kid. In Brooklyn, I think it may be a little more, but I don't think anyone actually pays $20,000. Many schools write the equivalent of an MSRP, but the real price is half that, or even less.

I think schools may be even more willing to lower the rate if the child is coming from public school, because they are vested in giving a Jewish education to every Jewish child. I think this would be the case even for middle-class families, not just to very low income families.
