1) It doesn’t necessarily give you exact location (it can get destroyed during an accident or explosion)
2) Getting federal law enforcement involved takes time.
So you want to mandate private plans have a "black box"? No pun intended but that just won't fly.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Something a little better than an ADS-B, which is already mandated.

honestly in this case I don't think the main issue was the location finding.

This story happened 530pm, didn't hit the news till 7, Jewish media at 8, and didn't see pictures of any rescue operation till 9ish, so what happened? how long till it take till the rescue team was activated and arrived and began to search?

The plane was found where the last ADS-B ping was, but it's in a forest so it's not easy to head into especially in bad weather

From what I heard the FBI had eventually gotten involved & given them a general area based on the last phone ping.

Was that the same location as the last ADS-B ping?

I haven’t seen anything written about this yet.

At some point they lost radar connection, possibly due to low altitude or it had already crashed or some other reason. At some point they reached out to the feds for help. I haven’t seen any timeline on if they first searched the last radar location & then asked the feds or if they immediately asked for help.

In the 40 minute press conference on Friday they said that they were on their way to the area of the last radar ping, and the FBI helped them get a more precise location. But it was in the general area that they were heading. The FBI location was one of the things that made them determine that it wasn't in the water.

And it’s a wooded area & due to bad weather drones were of no help. So it takes time.

They were even talking of calling off the search for the night until the FBI gave them the location of the phone ping.

its seems like they ejected themselves, ejection seats are available but pricey
is there an affordable option for a parachute?

While this was a very sad story that effected us, to me the story from JFK last week is WAY more scary
JFK was a fluke. Scary, but not sure there are many lessons there for us to learn from, though surely the FAA and AA is on it.

There's a lot more to unpack from this flight. It's still too soon for some of them to be said, but they should be talked about in due time.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Unfortunately wouldn’t have helped here.

I feel like many of us would’ve felt like the father in the TLS story. But too soon to talk about it.

listening to ATC and seeing a birdseye view of the crash site in relation to the runway, they were seconds away from a successful emergency landing.

In Alaska you'll find a Garmin InReach in pretty much every GA aircraft. It's cheap and effective. I carry one on all my travels as well.

Besides for the SOS capabilities and satellite messaging, it maintains a constant satellite uplink and transmits its location from anywhere on earth to a monitoring database as often as every 10 seconds (user adjustable).

Cost is around $450 for the device and $35-75/mo for service. Small potatoes compared to all other aircraft costs.

Just looked at my pics from one trip last summer, each aircraft I was on had an InReach.

Instant tracking and locating, regardless of cell phone coverage or waiting on FBI or ADS-B data... They don't play around in Alaska.

Forget about GA, if someone on board MH370 had one of these it would've been found in minutes.
