Whoever heard of such a thing??? Whoever thought this was a good idea to forward??? It was bad enough that the poor man mistakenly sent it to a shuir group instead of directly to his wife. But people are so blinded by tragedy porn, by being the first to send an-even-more gut-wrenching picture or video, by being a whatsapp group hero!

We have reached a new low. This was bad enough in the past, but today crossed a line.

Anyone who forwarded that screenshot has some serious introspection to do, and maybe a lot more. And the person or people who initially put this out to the public.... I can't even think of the appropriate action.

No, it’s the fault of YWN and Matzav and the Jewish Content Network and everyone else who has a part in the disgusting sensationalism that has become the norm with every tzedaka campaign and cause. They encourage voyeurism, idle curiosity, and unhealthy invasion of privacy, and cause people to become immune to, and thereby rob people of their sensitivity to others plight.

Here’s a random sampling of just tonights lurid offerings. These are the first ones that appeared on YWN and Matzav, and are tame compared to others I’ve seen. The sooner we stop giving business to the people who put out this disgusting content the better our chances of regaining our sensitivity and privacy when incidents such as tonight occur.

They make obscene amounts of money from these campaigns and have figured out that going vulgar and sensational is what nets them the most money. The sad thing is that even if they have success, people soon become immune to the constant barrage  of lurid clickbait, so they have to go even lower to get people to keep clicking.

Recently saw Lex Fridman talking about this podcast https://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-61-blitz-painfotainment/ (I didn't listen), that goes through human history of public torture and executions and describes it as Painfotainment (pain for entertainment), basically the idea that human nature is to love watching these things.

The video of the little kids sobbing out a kaddish by the grave, the kallah crying as she describes her families plight, the clickbait hooks like “you will never guess what…” “His dark secret” “They heard the screams from the flames” and the like.

It became kosher because it’s for a good cause and after all it raises more money for the family. There is no question that being exposed to a rivarevand lurid details of every tragedy and need made it more accepts to share those details on public forums, and even to actively seek out those details. Of course they don’t bear sole responsibility. Passing an accident scene with a young mother being taken on a stretcher into a waiting ambulance and everybody has to gather round and take photo and video as if there’s a circus act instead of a young mother and a worried family is horrific.

We desperately need to recapture the Jewish concepts of הצנע לכת , of מה טובו אהליך יעקב, of נושא בעול etc. But to my mind these marketing campaigns are contributing in a big way, they are not just profiting of an existing reality.

This is not the case. I remember seeing similar marketing on signs used in campaigns going to shuls already 30 years ago. "Everyone should make a hpra'at keva for...."
