Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
« on: February 23, 2023, 11:03:59 AM »
I searched and didn't find any thread that talks about this.

Long story short, I'm diagnosing myself with carpal tunnel syndrome. A while ago (almost a year) I got myself this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BIFNTMC mouse and I think it helped. But, now the pain is back with a vengeance. My whole arm feels numb and I feel it getting much worse daily.

So, I'm wondering if anyone here has any "real" (not just google) suggestions? I know there's a brace that I can get I'm not sure which one.
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Train your left hand to use the mouse. You continue to do all the other life work with  your right, so you split the strain; you don't just move carpal tunnel to the left hand.

I'm a lefty  :D

So all my life work is with my left hand, yet my right is for the mouse.

Have you seen a doctor for this? If not, that is step one. You don't want permanent nerve damage by waiting too long.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

+1. Also:

I think my chiropractor once told me that not having your elbow on an armrest helps a lot. You may be able to remove the armrests from your chair completely. I think I've also heard that it helps to have your chair/desk set up so that your arm is completely horizontal. Not 100% sure about that though.

It may be worth asking someone to take pictures/videos of you working, and then reveiwing them with a chiropractor, and they can make suggestions. That's what I did (just for general back issues, not for CTS) and my chircopractor was able to provide some good suggestions.

I don’t think that is accurate. It was recommended to have your mouse lower than your arm. A good set up would be to stand and have a work station with your arm sort of going down slightly.

Have you tried a trackball mouse? My father made the switch years ago bc of CT like issues and never looked back.

I've heard that there some new kind of treatment developed in Israel for it that works with ultrasound waves.

I have no additional information of it and no first and not even second hand experience with it though

DW is an OT student, here is what she says:
Numbness from Carpal Tunnel would be on the palm side of your thumb, index, middle and half of ring finger. Symptoms usually worse at night. It would be a good idea to get it checked out by an OT to make sure it's not something else (need a referral from Dr. first. The same nerve can be impinged higher up, needing different treatment. You can do self tests: phalen's test and Tinel's test.

For home management of CT:
- Splint: splint to keep the wrist in neutral (bent back slightly- remember this when using keyboard too). Best if fabricated for your hand (done by OT), the classic splints sold may not work for your hand.
- Avoid repetitive strain, vibration or tightening of the hand
- Median nerve glides (image attached)
- heat pack to relax the area
Feel free to follow up

Ultrasound is used frequently in hand therapy clinics here in America. It has a few uses, but for Carpal Tunnel it helps with the inflammation and healing process.

Lay off the amount of time you're on the computer, take more frequent breaks.

I bought these Copper Compression Recovery Wrist Brace - Copper Infused Adjustable Support Splint for Pain, Carpal Tunnel, Arthritis, Tendonitis, RSI, Sprain. Night Day Splint for Men Women - Fits Right Hand S-M https://a.co/d/fu07QIA

But really any brace is fine. See a doctor!

Random thing that helped me - I stepped up exercise, including strengthing my arms overall. The increased blood flow and variety of movement worked for me
Jury Duty: Nothing to do there but chill and write a TR. Kinda like the beach but missing the view and ocean breeze.

5 years my neighbor had to fight his company for the surgery. Final had to take them to court and won.
Felt great after the surgery and it has been about 3 years now.
