Help me build my tool set
« on: March 15, 2023, 11:52:38 PM »
Looking for a full set of new tools.
I will try give as much context as possible to better understand my needs.
I have always used my parents tools and borrowed from friends when there was something they didn't have.
I am now married, living at my own home, and willing to spend on quality tools that will last me a lifetime.
For now, I am not looking for building tools, rather all the basic tools that you can think of which may be required for assembly.
I am willing to spend extra on a brand name tools like Dewalt or Milwakee.
I need recommendations on drills, ratchet sets, bits, wrenches, hammers, etc.

Thank you

A lot of it is personal preference. I started my collection a few years ago.  :)
95% of non-power tools I have are Craftsman.
I would start with a screwdriver, socket and pliers set.
Then you just add to it.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Any recommendation on a Milwaukee Fuel drill? I am seeing surge vs no surge and each model is different, it kind of throws me off.

I find that for power tools especially battery operated it pays to buy brands like Makita or Milwaukee but for non power tools off brand works just as well (except replacement blades and bits)

I have a Makita 18Volt drill and I'm very happy with it
If you want something smaller I used to have Milwaukee 12volt small drill set and was really happy with it

This drill is compact and light and easy to use with a long battery life

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Bosch-2-Tool-12-Volt-Max-Power-Tool-Combo-Kit-with-Soft-Case-Charger-Included-and-2-Batteries-Included/4736769

ETA I realized the one I have is the brushless. It may be worth waiting for Nov time to buy the power tools.

They have ryobi and ridgid power tools. All refurbished or factory blemished.

Deep socket set (no need for standard in 99% of cases)
I use this

I'd recommend getting a drill adapter for all the sizes https://www.walmart.com/ip/174619262

Another thing I'd recommend is getting a full precision screwdriver set. Like https://www.ebay.com/itm/175375397629?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=A9tu2gJ7TPC&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=RLgacEyGRd-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

A headlamp.

A rubber mallet from dollar tree.

Most important you need a proper place to store everything in an organized way.

Lowes, Ace, Amazon.

I found the screwdrivers with the clear handle (those are the ones I have) seem better quality than the ones with red and black handles, but don't have actual experience.

A few thoughts:

- I have this Makita 18v drill/driver set. Great tools and tons of power, but overkill for most household projects. Nice big batteries. I’ve added a tire inflator for my car too, and maybe I’ll add an impact wrench sometime, so it’s nice to have a battery system with lots of other tools.

- I then bought this Milwaukee 12v Screwriver (on a HD glitch for less than $50) and was blown away by it. I use it for 95% of projects, and rarely take out the 18v anymore. It can easily drive screws, drill holes in wood, etc. I tried the Bosch 12v that was constantly on sale on DDMS, but found that I liked the Milwaukee seems much more powerful and much more solid.

- For household projects, I’d strongly recommend a drill with a quick-release chuck like the Milwaukee 12v above. It’s much more convenient and quicker to swap bits with just a simple click, as opposed to tightening a real chuck. You can get a set of drill bits with quick-release hex-shaped bottoms (like this one that I have) so you can drill holes with the same

-Invest in good drill bits and screw bits. You absolutely get what you pay for in that area- a cheap Ryobi set was practically disposable for me, and lasted maybe a few months before rounding or cracking, whereas good Milwaukee shockwave sets have lasted me years so far. i'm sure all the big brands have good sets, but I've found that the Milwaukee ones are priced well sometimes. (At one point Milwaukee even gave them away for free on a deal like this.)

-I’m fine with off-brands for tools with no moving parts like a hammer, but sometimes things with moving parts like pliers can break or loosen if they’re really junky. I go for something in the mid range at HD.

-I have something like this simple tool bag for day-to-day items. The fact that it’s open means I can always find things, and if I’m going somewhere I can throw other tools or supplies in and not worry about it not being able to close it.

-As others have mentioned, start with the essentials and then buy as needed. You might be able to buy better-suited tools once you have a specific project's needs in mind.

I got the HDX homeowners tool kit from Home Depot for cheap. It is perfect for 99% of hand-tool jobs. And comes in an organized box.

Unfortunately, it's no longer available at homedepot.com but perhaps a store has leftover stock or you can get it 3rd party (which may wipe out the savings).

I also got the HDX basic tool kit approx. 10 years ago and has held up great until now. Some things were junky like the clamps, boxcutter, and tape measure.  But it was worth the $19.99 I spent on it. I also got a Dewalt drill then, the one that is constantly being posted on the forums on sale and @myi keeps on saying its not a good deal :) I got it for $100 on black Friday along with an extra battery, bits set, and drill set. All of my DeWalt stuff have kept up great!

I started off with a hammer and a screw driver
and then i got the drill deal on ddms, but a drill with a driver would be useful sometimes
