Help me build my tool set

Hp on sale today but it’s not brushless. Still a nice starter set.

Personally, unless I needed all those tools, I’d rather get a smaller set from Dewalt, Makita or Milwaukee. Not sure I’d lock myself into the Ryobi system- not sure the quality is the same. Just my perception though.

I love Makita. Wonder how the quality compares?
That brings up another question. Should buy the top of the line when technology is changing all the time?

I got myself a smaller set last summer. Excellent tools. Did lots of online research and was debating between Dewalt, Milwaukee and Makita. You can't just go by the tool name, as there are various versions of each tool (for example I almost went with Milwaukee, but then saw some reviews about issues with the latest version. When I found the kit I wanted at HD, it went out of stock, and then the new version became available - which I didn't want to buy due to issues I read about, and higher prices).

For storage and carry, it doesn't seem like Makita has good options like Milwaukee or Dewalt (or even Ryobi or Ridgid). Though it doesn't say anywhere you can't use one brand storage and carry with another brand tools.

They are the basic power tools except for maybe the Multi-Tool. I just bought a Multi-Tool last year and kicking myself for not buying it 10 years ago. You talk about a time saver!!!

Besides, can Ryobi get you a microwave? Though it does require two 40v batteries.

They are the basic power tools except for maybe the Multi-Tool. I just bought a Multi-Tool last year and kicking myself for not buying it 10 years ago. You talk about a time saver!!!

Basic maybe, but not everybody needs a circular saw or reciprocating saw if they’re mostly just doing basic household tasks. And I feel like the flashlight is often just a filler.

Trimming cabinets, removing grout, cutting drywall for outlets, cutting drywall to run low voltage wire, trimming bottom of door jams when laying flooring and other uses I forgot in just the last year.

Not at this point - I have a new construction house.

IINM Makita has the largest selection of cordless tools and accessories.

Most recommendations I have seen is to settle on a battery platform and build around that. Makita, Milwaukee and Dewalt all have excellent tools. They also have several battery platforms.

Major brands are clearly focused on cordless. For many hand tools the 18V platforms are quite powerful and the advantage of being cordless is seen as overweighing the disadvantages. And 36V and up becoming serious contenders for heavier tools.

The world definitely has a preference for cordless. Phones, tools, and more.

I personally find the large 18 v batteries unwieldy and that they make the tool so much more difficult to handle. I've used some of them and found that the technology in the Bosch 12v allowed it power close (but not quite the same) as the larger batteries. Craftsman used to make a similar drill with a grey body, but it is discontinued. I find their current lineup to be lower quality.

Mostly agreed. I have a Bosch 12V drill and impact driver. Those are my go-to for small household needs. I needed a circular saw and wanted a more powerful drill, and opted for the Makita 18V brushless. With the advancement in battery technology, there are smaller and lighter batteries available. For a non-pros I think smaller batteries might be better, as they make the tools easier to handle and there's less usage. Some tools (such as a circular saw) really do need more powerful batteries.
