Vice grips have been very handy for me a bunch of times, I think it's great to have in a beginner collection.
If you're doing work on your car, there are specific tools that you may want to get, depending on your car. I had a Maxima - the engine took up a ton of space and left no room to maneuver. I ended buying tools that worked well in tight spaces. E.g., a set of ratcheting wrenches with heads that adjust 180°.
It's not something that I use for everyday, but super handy for car work.
Other super helpful tools for car work: a breaker bar, Milwaukee fuel torque wrench (easy on/off wheels)
Something that has been very useful for every day stuff is a set of Stanley screwdrivers. Probably 15, maybe 20? Ranging in size from tiny to huge (slotted and Phillips). The shaft is hex shaped, so you can use with a wrench for added torque.
