Not a chance it is a joke.  Has never been the case.  In fact, years back when my prior company joined the Airpass program with AA, that was one of the much touted benefits -- there was a cocktail glass graphic on the back of the Airpass membership card to indicate you were entitled to free drinks in coach.

If you are in First Class, free drinks of all types.  Coach?  Soda, water, juice ONLY.  Still the case Domestic -- but according the release posted by Moish, free beer and wine on INt;l flights.  Now only if they started carrying Baron Herzog....
