Sapphire World MasterCard
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:07:14 PM »
As Dan posted on dansdeals.com, you could convert your SP from a VS to a WMC with the most important benefit being CDW in Israel.

I, like Dan, had the same experience with switching where they downgraded me from a SP to a regular Sapphire. When I originally called up to make the change, the CSR told me that he doesn't have the option to do it but he'll escalate it and I'll get a response in the mail. Sure enough, I noticed a couple days later that there was a new account listed in my Online banking and a today I received my Sapphire (not preferred) WMC in the mail. Being that Dan already mentioned that he realized they downgraded him, I immediately called up and told them to re-upgrade me to SP and make sure it remains a WMC and does not revert back to a VS. The CSR I spoke with this morning was very helpful and she told me it was a mistake and they would re-upgrade me and it would remain a WMC, and she also credited me 7,500 UR points for the inconvenience!

What have been others' experiences with switching?

Also, as mentioned above, the WMC offers CDW in Israel, but when I read the benefits guide that came with the card, it says: "Benefits may not apply in ..., ..., Israel, etc. Please check with your rental agency first", It doesn't say Israel is excluded, but that it might be, and from what people write about their experiences renting cars in Israel it seems like they usually make you pay for CDW, so if I was to check with the rental agency, as the T&C says I should, then I'm pretty sure they'll say it doesn't cover! So, how does this work? Is Israel covered or not?

Another advantage of the SP WMC over VS is that it has No Preset Spending Limit.

I saw on FT someone asked a CSR for a comparism chart of the diff between WMC and VS and they sent him 2 letters outlining each cards benefits, which he scanned in and only the WMC letter states the NPSL.

I imagine that it's a WMC benefit (not specifically Chase Sapphire) as my only other WMC is a Citi AA which also has NPSL and a couple months ago they gave me a 150% CL increase without me even requesting it!

If it's true that the MC version is still a NPSL then I would actually say that A disadvantage of the SP WMC over VS is that it has No Preset Spending Limit.

Why is that a disadvantage?

A Chase SP rep I spoke with when I activated my card told me that the Visa has NPSL.

does the visa account still remain on your online banking? Is the master card number the same as the visa's.

Not really possible since Visa starts with a 4 and MC starts with a 5

I don't understand, what is the final answer. Does the Sapphire Mastercard cover CDW in Israel or not? I am getting it (I hope) to use instead of Citi Preferred Mastercard which charges forex fee.

Yes. Period, end of story.
With no Forex and 2.14ppd, this is the card to use for rentals in Israel.

You said you got some sort of letter from chase confirming that CDW works in Israel?
From what people are saying about past rentals in Israel, unless you have such a letter, they force you to pay for CDW, especially now that the T&C leaves it up to them to decide if it's eligible!

That's very YMMV.  Most places will still allow MCW to rent without CDW without any letter, but getting the letter of coverage is never a bad idea.

So, if they let you decline CDW without the letter, then you are fine since the T&C never specifically excluded Israel?

You are fine because the card covers Israel.  All Ts and Cs say Israel may be excluded, which is why you PUTPAC.

does that mean the credit report shows 2 accounts? it's highly unlikely they delete that visa account one day to the next.
unless the account number on the report stays the same even if the credit card number switches?

Getting the letter from Citi has been easy. They email it to you when you give them the dates. BTW, the rental has to be less than 31 days. If more, they don't cover.
