instead of changing i canceled and re-booked and all they charged was the 2.50 I paid for taxes and fees! although there's a 40$ fee for canceling as well, apparently they don't charge you more then originally paid for the ticket.

I had that as well I was surprised but they said you always have the option to just forfeit the taxes.

Can you please be more specific? Did all the miles come back? Instantly?
Can I do it over the phone?
If I only want to change the outgoing flight to a later flight, is there a way to only cancel the outgoing and lose $2.50, but keep the return intact? (since the return flight is no longer available, and there is no guarantee that as soon as i cancel my seat, that it will reopen, so i want to hold on to it)

It was on the phone for me. And you can lose one the seat if you cancel. They don't always come back into inventory.

Do the miles come back instantly?
Were you told on the phone that you were only going to lose the $2.50, or were you told $40, and were ok with that, and them were suprised to learn that it was only $2.50 each way. (im asking because I might not be ok with the $40, and dont want to tell them to go ahead and cancel, before I hear that it is $2.50.
So was he/she aware that its only $2.50 before she started the cancellation, or did both of you find out after the cancellation went through? Thanks!

I'm curious, but don't have a need to cancel any reservations now.  Maybe you want to call and ask hypothetical questions before giving them your details.  If the agent tells you $2.50, you can proceed (and report back).  If you hear $40, hang up and call again (and also report back).

online 2.50
When you did it online, did it tell you that it was only going to be $2.50, or did it say $40 and were surprised to later only get charged $2.50?

Have more people had any experience on this matter? Do you truly only lose $2.50 when you cancel the AA ticket booked with BA miles, and not get hit with their $40 cancellation fee?

Another wrinkle for this thread...

What if you have a round-trip booked under their old system (before the Avios transition) and now you want to cancel just the return trip (but keep the outgoing flight)?  There are 4 of us traveling, so the cancel fee matters.

Should I cancel the return portion now? Or wait until I'm on my trip and cancel the return flight (at least 48 hours in advance)?

Thanks

To answer my own question --- I called and they said the old rules apply (pre-Avios) and the ticket would need to be re-issued at $70 per passenger (x 4 = $280).  I started asking her about forfeiting only the taxes if I cancelled the entire flight and she seemed to have no clue what I was talking about (but I didn't press it because I need to keep my outgoing flight).
