China Spying
« on: May 13, 2023, 10:15:02 PM »
Yup and it includes free monitoring by the CCP...
I think this belongs in the politics board. I've thought about this topic recently but only have a good explanation for some things.

Assuming this is true, what would the Chinese government gain by having access to video cameras?

data, data, data.
Too generic. You have to be more specific. What data and what can it be used for?

So in short they can use it to see how busy a place is and identify people of interest. And get eyes/ears in sensitive places. Anything else I missed?

Aside from the last one. What can tracking a person and seeing how busy a place is be used for?

Let's take a step back, what are they doing with surveillance within China?

No idea. I'd guess they can silence dissidents and find people that share the dissidents views. How they silence them idk. But they have a physical presence there and can do that physically whether jail, threatening, or killing.

You shouldn't trust any iot device, best practice is to keep it on a separate network

I guess it's to find the associates of people of interest and which places they frequent so they can spearhead efforts to hack them or their associates and find sensitive data. Like military data or something that can be used for blackmail. Political stuff too.
I don't think it's to gather data on ordinary people. But that can be a side benefit if they happen to find it useful for some random thing. I still can't think of what it would be used for.

For apps and cell phones I believe it's just a thing of money. They want to see which products they should produce in China to strengthen their economy. And to steal credentials.

Other network things might be used to compromise a network.

How much of this is true? Idk
How much of this is technically possible? I don't either know :)
