AVIS now charges cancellation fee?

 AVIS now charges cancellation fee?
Used to be able to free cancel but looked at rental at MCO and it says $50 cancel fee if canceled anytime before 24 hours of rental day or $150 if cancelled within 24 hours etc. Looking for rental in August 2023 first week.

Is this only AVIS doing this or other rental companies now charges cancellation fee once booked?

Advantage Rental Car tried to take my entire $500 prepayment once. Thankfully I got it back after a ton of back and forth and involving my CC company. Car rental is one of the last providers that don't require providing a credit card to hold a reservation. I say take advantage of that as long as it lasts.

Budget also charges, but also only on prepaid bookings.
Small tip: if you do decide to prepay and do have to cancel last minute, MOVE the reservation to a later date first and then cancel it, so you will only pay 50$ instead of the 150$ 'last minute' cancellation charge.
