Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)
There are two trails from the south rim that go down into the canyon (and all the way to the canyon floor, which is a strenuous multi-day hike). You can experience a taste of it, by turning around at any point.
  • South Kaibab Trail - One of the top rated trails for the GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
  • Bright Angel Trail - Also one of the top rated trails for GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
There are also trails along the south rim (called Rim Trails) that don't descend into the canyon, and are relatively flat. These offer views of the canyon and are dotted with various scenic viewpoints. Some areas of the rim trail are paved others are not. These may be more suitable those with young children or those fear of hiking near the edge of the canyon cliffs. The National park shuttle buses also transport passengers to various points within the park, along the south rim.
A PDF map of grand canyon national park south rim is at https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/upload/sr-pocket-map.pdf
Grand Canyon National Park Lodges

Nearby attractions outside the National Park include:
  • Skywalk
  • Bearizona Wildlife Park - Williams, AZ

Lake Powell (popular lake for boating, with kayak, motor boat, pontoon boat, houseboat rentals, Jetski, boat tours, and swimming). Lake and surrounding canyon walls are uniquely scenic together (it's actually a huge artificial reservoir surrounded by canyon walls, resulting from the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam

Going for a week vacation with 6 year old and an infant. Is there enough to keep busy with in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area without going to Sedona, Grand Canyon or any other places more than an hour away? (My wife and I visited Sedona and GC already)

you or the kid?
Like any big city of you want you can find a million things to do but mostly not things that can't be done at home.
You can go fruit picking if that's your thing. There are a bunch of citrus farms not too far out and have some really good fruit. There is the science museum. Etc. Etc.

Thanks. Looks like citrus picking would be out of season (we'd come beginning of September).

Did anyone go to the Phonecian recently? They are under renovation. I was thinking to do two nights in a standard room and one night in a suite with plunge pool. Just not sure if it's enjoyable to be there during renovation...
Any reviews on the Four Seasons?  or the Biltmore?
Thank you!

Or stay in a canyon suite. I believe the pool there is open during renovations.   One caveat: everyone else will be at that pool, too.

Can anyone recommend easy hikes around the grand canyon? I'll be there with 4 kids ages 9, 8, 6 and 4. Nothing too strenuous or too long (1-2 hours max)

I did a very similar trip, but it was 110 degrees, so we pretty much drove to the various lookouts

I'll be there in January so it will be cold! I wouldn't hike in 110 degree weather either.

Do the rim trail. I would also start one of the other trails (e.g. Bright angel) and just go as far you can (provided is not icy). Cool to get a perspective from inside the canyon.

I would try overnight, but doable if you leave early. Did something similar http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=80670.0

do i need a full day at grand canyon or can i do that and sedona in a day? - you should really do a hike at the grand canyon. If you skip on that you can extremely rushedly do both

No food anywhere near the canyon
