Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)
There are two trails from the south rim that go down into the canyon (and all the way to the canyon floor, which is a strenuous multi-day hike). You can experience a taste of it, by turning around at any point.
  • South Kaibab Trail - One of the top rated trails for the GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
  • Bright Angel Trail - Also one of the top rated trails for GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
There are also trails along the south rim (called Rim Trails) that don't descend into the canyon, and are relatively flat. These offer views of the canyon and are dotted with various scenic viewpoints. Some areas of the rim trail are paved others are not. These may be more suitable those with young children or those fear of hiking near the edge of the canyon cliffs. The National park shuttle buses also transport passengers to various points within the park, along the south rim.
A PDF map of grand canyon national park south rim is at https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/upload/sr-pocket-map.pdf
Grand Canyon National Park Lodges

Nearby attractions outside the National Park include:
  • Skywalk
  • Bearizona Wildlife Park - Williams, AZ

Lake Powell (popular lake for boating, with kayak, motor boat, pontoon boat, houseboat rentals, Jetski, boat tours, and swimming). Lake and surrounding canyon walls are uniquely scenic together (it's actually a huge artificial reservoir surrounded by canyon walls, resulting from the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam

There is a water park in a natural setting I think it's called slide rock. I did not go but IIRC someone who was with us took her little kids there and was raving about it.
Looks quite cool, the only question is if it won't be too cold out for them. Right now it's 42° there.
So that's one activity, what else?

Not sure what else would work there. I did a lot of hiking and those kind of things, so don't really know what else is good for little kids. How long are you there for?

Doing a Vegas-AZ trip starting Sunday. Plan on driving Wed from LAS to GC, sleep Wed. night in either Flagstaff of Sedona and do something good Thurs. before I get to PHX at night.
Not sure what I'm doing Fri but it's gotta be in the PHX area.
Flying out Sun. in the AM.

So I guess Thursday and Friday are the days I still need to plan out in AZ, Thurs. starting out in Sedona.

If you are driving from LAS all the way to the GC on Wednesday I would not stay over in Sedona that same night. It is an extra 40 minutes down this huge mountain, not a good idea as you will be really tired.

You mean you wouldn't stay in Sedona over Flagstaff or you wouldn't leave the GC area altogether and stay the night in GC?

Looking at the map I doubt I'll have enough time to make it there.
Especially considering that the GC north rim is closed during this time of the year...
The only way it would make sense CMIIW would be to drive straight there from LAS, next stop being Sedona, and drive to GC on Thurs and schlep to PHX on Thurs from GC....

I for sure would not stay in Sedona over Flagstaff as at that hour the extra driving will not be worth it, considering that you will have already done a lot of driving.

So Flagstaff it is. The drive is 1.5 hours, shouldn't be that bad, I'll take it slow and easy.

I disagree.

First of all, I assume we're talking about whether he should stay in Flagstaff or Sedona, I'm assuming it's a given he's going to Sedona.

IMO it makes sense to stay in Sedona, getting the driving out of the way wed. night, rather than (wasting prime daytime hours) driving to Sedona in the morning then back toward the GC. (But I guess that's a matter of personal preference.)

If I stay in FT the night, I only got a 45 minute drive in the morning until I get to Sedona.
Advantages:
1) Shorter drive Wed. night (don't forget I'm doing the big LAS-GC drive on Wed morning).
2) Better hotel selection.
From there I'm only heading south to be in PHX that night (staying at family that night as well as over Shabbos).
So I don't understand this sentence:
then back toward the GC.

Oops, my bad.
I misunderstood. I guess I wasn't paying much attention, for some reason I thought you were leaving Vegas Wed. afternoon and doing the GC Thurs.

You're right. Stay in flagstaff.

40 minutes down this huge mountain
Right off GC or between Flagstaff and Sedona?

between flagstaff and sedona, hence the reason for flagstaff. Also the hotel selection as you mention is another good reason.

Well... I was thinking of staying in Sedona, for the reason to get the drive out of the way in the evening, as for me Sunday, I will be by the GC, and Monday late afternoon I want to be in Phoenix, Mon Morning I would spend a little time in Sedona ect...

So I guess staying in Sedona makes sense even though there isnt as good as a hotel selection

Drive from GC to Flagstaff and enjoy going to sleep 45 minutes earlier than you would if you would drive so Sedona. Wake up and spend those 45 minutes driving to Sedona :)
