All it shows is guidelines for the חוטם. Virtually every esrog has a slant.

I've also seen a reference to שו"ת מד"י (סוכות ח"ב סי' קנ"ח) but no idea what Sefer that is.

On another note this was the practice in front of some great Rebbe's who didn't condemn it, including the late Skulen and Satmar rebbe's from what I know

Hashem (that’s g-d for anyone keeping score at home) is the one who runs the world, how do i know? He told us. HE decides everything, there is no such thing as bechira in the way that you’re describing it, how do i know? Chazal. Its hard to explain the bechira that a goy has, and an animal definitely has no bechira, so its really pretty hard to be able to explain this based on bechira. We as yidden have bechira in ONLY yiras shamayim (for example getting hostile at people and accusing them of saying something they never even said). How do I know? A gemara in Nidda.

There's a spectrum from Erev Rav to Tzadik Gomur, although in a moment of true teshuva, everything is possible, as the Rambam says. I hope you don't make a bracha levatala when you say Slach Lanu three times a day (as the Tanya points out).
