Grasshopper.

To understand the mindset of this period it is important to recognize the distinction between a computer terminal and a free-standing computer. Some experts believed that individuals would have terminals at home that communicated with powerful remote computers providing utility-like services for information and interaction. These experts believed that an isolated computer at home would be too under-powered to be worthwhile.

Who says this tech isn't at that stage as well compared to where it will lead?

Interesting take from Hillel Fuld: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/apple-vision-pro-failure-revolution-hillel-fuld

TLDR:

Quote
Apple knows this won’t sell like the iPhone does. But they also know that developers will start creating the ecosystem for Vision Pro and then people absolutely will buy it. When will it really take off? When they release the Vision+, the Vision SE, and the Vision Ultra (I made up those names.). This will only be the first generation of this device.

The more specific take has to do with developing an ecosystem, but even that isn't exactly original. See MKBHD's 'impressions' video.

I can't answer about 77 but I can tell you that this was nothing like the sentiment in the early 80s and definitely not having anything to do with looking things up in the library. Computers were very widespread long before they replaced even one library trip. Maybe some people said they weren't useful but by the very early 80s the question wasn't about a use case but whether it made sense for each individual right then.

Fwiw you are talking 40 years after they were invented. Even the earlier VR headset have only been around for 32 years. Get back to me in 10 years from now and let's see where the tech is holding.

The first iPhone had no app store. Was only available for ATT. Didn't have 3G internet when other phones did. Required a 2 year ATT contract to buy. Had a tiny amount of memory compared to iPods that dominated the market at the time.

I don't see the use case for this, but I also thought the first iPhone was dumb.

But Apple is brilliant at iterating and I'd never count them out after what they did with several generations of iPhone.

The R1 chip is such a huge jump in spacial image processing. This is step 1 towards apple cars with in house processing and accurate realtime ai.

Now that might be something. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future something like this is used to control/drive cars or other vehicles.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

"Who needs a car when we have the Apple Vision Pro?" Apple said in an interview with absolutely nobody, stating that this will eliminate the need for cars.

Disagree, if you're drawing a comparison to iPhone.

Smart phones already had significant market penetration that apple could capitalize on with an improved offering. Similar story for ipod's improvement over the mp3 players that were available in the late 90s/early 00s.

Vision pro may prove to be a success, but it won't be like iphone or ipod. Apple will need to create a category that other brands have tried and failed at.

Windows, Samsung, Palm, and Blackberry tried and failed to get mass smartphone penetration, no? There was no significant smartphone market until iPhone.

Smart phones/palm pilots & mp3 players were way more prevalent in those days than Oculus/Google glass have been in recent years.

Oculus never aimed to be for daily tasks. It's in the Nintendo category, not computing. And Google Glass was ages ago.

Agreed. This is a new category. That's why it's incomparable to Apple's success with ipod/iphone.

It doesn't have to be the same to be comparable.

There are communities where internet is still virtually non-existent. Last I checked, they are still very much alive.

True, once you become dependent on it, it's really hard to get away from it. But if everyone would've conformed 100 percent to the original guidance to completely ban internet, IMO we would all be better, happier people today.

If the internet did discreetly exist (for some people) in such a neighborhood, which of the two of us would be more likely to know about it?

Smart phones/palm pilots & mp3 players were way more prevalent in those days than Oculus/Google glass have been in recent years.

Disagree on all counts, however I still think that there are other reasons to say it’s not necessarily the same path as before. Smartphones/mp3 players were something that were wanted and needed before they were invented, they were the natural technological progression. Cassette players, cd players, mp3 players. Car phone, cell phone, smartphone. No one got close to nailing that last step like Apple did in either category.

Improved VR tech isn’t something people want or need. And it still has the tremendous limitation of isolation.
