Man dies on fight when loses inhaler
« Reply #3 on: June 27, 2023, 10:52:39 AM »
Quote
A British man died earlier this week after he allegedly dropped his inhaler during an asthma attack less than an hour before his flight landed in New York earlier this week.

Shimoin Brauer, 25, of London, fell unconscious on Monday morning when he panicked and his inhaler slipped from his fingers about 45 minutes before his flight was set to land in New York, Jewish News reported.

The crew initially attempted to give him oxygen because they were unaware his airways had closed due to an asthma attack, the outlet said, citing a member of Brauer’s Orthodox Jewish community in Stamford Hill.

The crew also attempted CPR, but were tragically unable to save the passenger’s life.

Brauer was traveling to the US to volunteer at a summer camp, Jewish News said.

An investigation into the incident is reportedly ongoing.

About 10 people in the US die from asthma every day, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

I know nothing about asthma attacks - was it a bad idea to give oxygen or just a waste of time? What are they supposed to do?

Maybe not a waste of time but he needs the oxygen plus a medication to open his lungs which are too tight during the attack.

Shouldn't (or don't) planes have a rescue kit that should include an emergency use inhaler?

If they knew he needed an inhaler they probably would’ve used it or located the dropped inhaler. I’m guessing he wasn’t able to communicate at that point so they just had to guess what the problem was.

Yup, probably. Very sad. As a parent of a child with Asthma, this is a nightmare. Also, this was a severe attack, as usually, it takes time to reach that point. But dust and other factors can trigger.

Is there a solution to the problem when traveling solo? Maybe a necklace with information?

Such a sad story. BD"E.

How about wearing the inhaler on a necklace. Would make it obvious what the issue is and no need to try to find an inhaler.

If airlines would have an option to submit medical conditions, it would help.

Maybe, maybe not. It would make them responsible for what they should have known, but what percentage of serious medical incidents that happen on planes would benefit from having such notes, that it makes sense to make it a part of the procedure to collect this info and to go looking for it when there’s an issue. Especially since it’s likely that in many such cases the info might not even be submitted or when it is it might not make sense to the people reading it (e.g. if it’s written ambiguously or in a foreign language).

Case can only be opened by a doctor or paramedic
Under most rules even a nurse can not open the drug section (even under the direction of a doctor on the ground)
Remember the British especially don't understand to make exceptions
