You used to be able to shop with a Costco gc without membership, even if you only paid part of the purchase with the gc. At one point, I had a member buy me a bunch of $10 gc.
I've done this recently, after I let my wife's membership expire before the groupon deal. They have to call over a manager to unlock and the balance can be paid in cash, not credit card.
Slightly off topic. Costco sometimes has deals for new members that haven't been members for 18 months. Can I get the deal if I had a household card but wasn't the primary member?
Nope, you won't get the deal. I tried it
I got the groupon deal.

Was at Costco in Brick yesterday, they were checking everyone's card & I was using someone else's card & they were able to tell that it was not me in the picture.

The frustrating part is they should be checking cards at the entrance not after a full shopping trip

I guess they don't feel a need to have a good customer service for non members.

It's not good customer service for members either bc if you were a member & sent your spouse/child to shop they would do the same thing

A spouse/child can get an additional household card for free, they don't suspect people circumventing the system when they can go the straight way.

You only get 2 cards per account for free (I think) which means if you & your spouse are the card holders, none of your children can go alone

It'd still cost them the resources to return everything to the shelves

Hate to say this, but it's hard to have sympathy for you in this situation.
I can't like this post.
Unfortunately my sympathies are cheap and handed out freely.

Depends on who is getting carded.

Anecdotally Costco seems to have a much lower percentage of minority members than the general population. I think this calls for affirmative action and giving minorities discounted or free membership.

Depends on the location. Costco in brick has a very small percentage of minority shoppers. Others have more, but still have an outsized proportion of non minority shoppers. The membership fee is a huge barrier to entry. Costco also tends to sell higher quality items rather than aiming for rock bottom prices like Walmart or the dollar stores. That leads to a more affluent demographic of shoppers; the typical Costco shopper earns over 125k a year.

The older, whiter demographic also helps their shrinkage rate. Their loss rate due to theft and the like is at around .12% ; Walmart and Target have close to ten times that rate. It’s not the only factor. Costco is obsessed with shrinkage. Everything from having to show membership to enter, to store layout, to the packaging of even small items in large packages, is to prevent theft. Even the bottleneck by the exit waiting for the receipt checkers is intentional. And the receipt itself has codes for date, items that belong under the basket, and supervisors signatures for stamps and certain other items that make it really hard to sneak stuff past the door checkers.

They have a very different model than Target or Walmart, and this is reflected in their shopper makeup.
