You cannot see totality from a plane if the sun is too high in the sky. The eclipse in Texas and Detroit is close to (solar) noon so you will miss it.

I've noticed that many news sites seem to just "copy paste". They may check if its true, (yes there is a delta flight at that time) but will frequently miss context issues like this one. (the sun is too high so you can't see it)
