The end of WhatsApp for the chareidi community?
« on: August 23, 2023, 09:23:35 AM »
WhatsApp is imminently rolling out a new feature called WhatsApp Channels. Until now WhatsApp was largely considered a relatively clean app that could be safely used on a completely filtered phone. The new feature will allow anonymous and private access to all sorts of video and content from within the app. It is being rolled out country by country. Is this the end of having WhatsApp on a filtered phone?

There will likely be some drama spare headed by people who've never used WhatsApp to begin with, but ultimately this is a tiny step forward to that world learning to handle technology instead of shutting yet another thing out. People will not stop using WhatsApp.

Practically, though this is being compared to the Wild West of Telegram, Meta actually does a good job enforcing their policy against nudity and pornography.

Most chareidim are not ok with having unfiltered access to Facebooks/Instagram on their phones which is essentially what WhatsApp will imminently be, even if they do police pornography. There will likely have to be some hard decisions made by many who live on WhatsApp.

I don't think it'll be exactly the same, but that's semantics and speculation.

The hard decision will be whether now's the time to adapt.

That’s what the non chareidim said 20 years ago. “You won’t be able to live and work without adapting to the reality of the internet”. The chareidim said “watch us.”

DW paid $0.99 for WhatsApp in 2015.

Start reading the main WhatsApp thread below, and you'll see why this isn't an issue.

In short, if it's an issue, filters can block that feature
