Think of Moving?

Airports:
  • CLE is about 15 minutes from downtown and 25-30 minutes from the Jewish community.  It's a focus city for Frontier, Spirit, and United.
  • The RTA (Rapid transit train) at Brookpark station has free parking and is just 1 train stop (3 minutes) to the stop inside the airport. The train costs $2.50 and the schedule is here: http://www.riderta.com/routes/redline/schedules/current#WestboundWeekday
An uber from Brookpark station to CLE is about $10.
  • Uber between the Jewish community and CLE is about $30.
  • CLE off-site parking is about $9/day, on-site parking is $17-$22/day, and curbside valet parking is $35/day.
  • CAK is ~40 minutes from the Jewish community and located nearby the NFL Hall of Fame.
  • Uber between the Jewish community and CAK is about $45.
  • CAK parking is $7/day for long-term and $15-$18/day for short-term.
  • PIT is ~100 minutes from the Jewish community. It offers nonstop service to London, Montreal, and more.

Hotels:
  • There is a Hyatt Place in Legacy Village within walking distance of the Jewish community, though it's located just outside of the Eruv. It costs only 8K points/night.
  • There is a nice Hyatt Regency downtown for 12K points/night (25 minutes drive) in a unique vintage arcade building and an excellent spa that gives hotel guests 25% off and accepts SpaFinder certs from Costco that can be purchased for an additional 20% off.
  • The nicest hotel in Cleveland is like the Ritz-Carlton downtown. Marriott's Metropolitan at The 9 is also highly regarded, with a bar in an old vault. There is also a Hilton, Westin, and Kimpton downtown.

Transportation:
  • There is a subway/light rail connecting the airport with downtown, University Circle (where the Case campus and many museums are) and the Jewish community area, but renting a car is pretty much required unless you are just going between the airport and downtown.

Thanx Dan,

So our plan right now is to leave NY late Sat night and arrive in Ctown in morning hit rock hall then indians game and grab an affordable kosher hot dog and then hit that waterpark in lake g.  If we get tired and wanna skip rock hall what do you think about just chilling in a park not far from stadium - is there any nice public places or waterside places to just chill for a few hours with a blanket?

Rock hall, baseball game, and waterpark all on the same day?
Edgewater Park is about 3 miles from the Jake/Prog and has a nice beach and park.

The Ice cream and doughnut places are all open.  Plus there are a couple chalav stam yogurt places (Yogurt Vi and Menchies) that have opened as well to much acclaim.  Never had the Amy Joy donuts, but Ungers Cinnamon and Custard donuts are both very good.

I'm actually in Cleveland right now, and came across this post by doing a search on the entire forum for the word "Menchies". Can you (or anyone else here) offer any more details about their kashrus status? I.e. Are they a kosher establishment, or a non-kosher establishment that sells prepackaged kosher items, or what? Is there any chalav yisroel to speak of?

From what I understand it is not a kosher establishment but all of their products are made under kosher chalav stam supervision.
I've never walked into the place so I would highly recommend asking your LOR or Cleveland Kosher for more info.

It's hard to move into the lower bowl until later in the game.  You can buy $8 upper box seats though behind home plate which are the top 6 rows and move down to a much closer row though easily.

The hot dog stand is in the lower bowl next to Subway and is accessible by anyone.

-Shimon's Deli (CH) also carries some prepared foods and closes at 6pm.

Where in CH is this? Is it the same Shimon as Shimon's Fish and Poultry?

Is it a good place to go? What is the food like? How about the service?

St. Louis....sounds intriguing...I'll look into it. With regard to Cleveland, I'll admit I haven't done all there is to do certainly in regard to the food department...hey, if two relaxing days can be had there - suggest some options and I'll be there!

Thanks!

PS If you're desperate, I can bring you some Salmon Pasta w/ Fries from Fish Grill while I'm at. :)
Hmm...might go for some Avocado egg rolls from LG as well in that case :D

Cleveland food highlights:
-Steak Au Poivre from Contempo Cuisine ($34) along with their Soup du jour ($5)
-The Bagel Shoope makes top-notch bagels (.95 or 12/$10).  Garlic and Jalapeno are both excellent.  Cookies (.95) are also good.  Eli is quite the fan so bring some his way. :)
-Sweet & Sour Chicken or Sesame Chicken ($14) with Fried Rice ($1) from Jerusalem Grill.
-An excellent pie of plain Pizza can be had at Kinneret ($16.50) along with authentic Sushi ($6-$8) on select nights of the week.  Spicy Fries ($1.95), homemade onion rings ($2.75), fried cauliflower ($3.25) and the eggplant parm ($6.50) are good choices as well.
-Top It Off specializes in pizza ($14) with a great variety of toppings ($1 each or 3 for $2.50).  Did you know corn, felafel, and onions go together pretty well on a pie of pizza?  They also specialize in incompetence at times so check your bill and your order before you leave.  Take out only.
-Beef or Turkey Shwarma in a laffa from Sababa ($9) along with some Tropical Sushi ($6.50, Mango, Kiwi, Avocado) if you're feeling like Israel, Japan, and Hawaii.  Decent homemade onion rings ($5) too.
-If Chef Dave at Young Israel is doing one of his buffet meals (1-2 times per month) then you're in for a real treat.
-Issi's Pizza can be good at rare times but is usually nothing to write home about.
-Subway is subway.  Meatball Marinara on Italian Herb with Mozzerella parve cheese (I was scared at first too, but it's good!) and sweet onion sauce is my usual but I'll go for Pepper Steak if they're out.  On select days it's $5.99 for a 6" meal deal, on others it's $8 for a 12" meal deal, on others $8.50 for just the 12" sub and $2 extra for the soda+2 cookies meal deal.
-There's a kosher hot dog/sausage stand at Indians games ($5)
-Chocolate Emporium has CY and non-CY chocolates and Ice Cream.  AFAIK, Cold Stone Creamery, Menchies Yogurt, and Yogurt Vi are kosher, non CY.
-Ungers bakery has great parve donuts.  Cinnamon (.95) and Custard ($1.35) are great.  Amy Joy has non-CY donuts.
-Abba's, Empire, Ruchama's, and Yacov's are all long gone unfortunately.

I'll make a post on some stuff to do soon, but when is this trip for?

No prob!
As for things to do, tripadvisor has a list of 70 items here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g50207-Activities-Cleveland_Ohio.html

Everything in Cleveland is divided by the Cuyahoga River, so if you see something being described as being on the East Side or West Side, it's referring to the River (yes, that did catch on fire in the 60s) that cuts through downtown.  It's illegal for East siders to go to the west side except to go to the airport, or at least it seems that's the case as east siders seem to stay east and the west siders stay west unless they venture to Nordstrom/Nordstrom Rack in Beachwood Place/Legacy Village.

Everything jewish/kosher is on the east side and the furthest 2 kosher restaurants from each other would be Kinneret and Subway in the JCC, about a 4 mile/12 minute drive.  Everything else is in between those 2 places.

-Cedar Point in Sandusky is on the way from Chicago and is an hour west of Cleveland, home to the most roller coasters in the world.  3 of the coasters usually place in the top 10 in the world.  There's also a massive indoor waterpark, an outdoor waterpark, an animal safari, and ferrys to the Lake Erie islands/put-in-bay in Sandusky.
-The "Emerald Necklace" is a chain of green Metroparks with great hiking that surrounds Cleveland.  October should be perfect to view the fall foliage.  If this is your thing also don't miss the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
-Chagrin Falls is a quaint village on the east side to walk around and you to can be chagrined by the falls.
-The Football HOF is in Canton, about an hour south of Cleveland.
-The Rock and Roll HOF is in downtown Cleveland on the lake next to the Great Lakes Science Center and Omnimax.
-The Indians, Cavs, and Browns provide major league sports entertainment in downtown Cleveland along with the minor league hockey Lake Erie Monsters.  Browns games are great with some of the best/craziest fans in the NFL.
-The Great Lakes Brewing Company has a great brewpub in Ohio City on the west side of downtown with tons of history (bullet holes still in the walls from Elliot Ness, who brought down Al Capone among other mobsters).  There are also tours and tastings of their great beers.  Right nearby is the famous West Side Market where on certain days of the week local farmers sell their great produce at low prices.
-October is too late for summer activities, but for now beaches like Edgewater Park in downtown, and Mentor Headlands Beach State Park are great.
-Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Rainforest is good for kids.
-Lots of quality museums (Art, Childrens, Natural History, Science, Auto-Aviation if vintage cars are your thing, etc) and even the Maltz museum of jewish heritage.
-Great shopping malls include the outdoor Crocker Park on the west side and the outdoor Legacy Village and indoor Beachwood Place on the east side.

There are no hotels within walking distance of the jewish community.  The only SPG is the Sheraton on the west side by the airport (30 minutes drive) although they are building an aloft in the downtown flats area nearby the casino being built right now.  There is also a  highly regarded Sheraton Suites by Cuyahoga Falls.
-There is a nice Hyatt Regency downtown (25 minutes drive) in a unique vintage arcade building and a Hyatt Place about 20 minutes away.

There is a subway/light rail connecting the airport with downtown, University Circle where the Case campus and many museums are, and the jewish community area, but renting a car is pretty much required.

Where in CH is this? Is it the same Shimon as Shimon's Fish and Poultry?

Is it a good place to go? What is the food like? How about the service?
The food is good, but it's take-out only.  It's also the only place in town to get yummy pride of the farm ice cream ($8/64 oz.) instead of the klein's mediocrity ($9.69/56 oz.) that ungers peddles.
-Tibor's also has an extensive and highly regarded take-out selection and they sell some locally made gourmet baked goods and popcorn.  You can also pick up a pack of Jerusalem's Grill very good Pita (Forgot to write about that earlier!) at Tibor's.
-Boris' and Unger's also have take-out delis that I haven't tried.
You can pick up shabbos food at any of those places or order from Chef Dave's at Young Israel, from Green road catering, or from Contempo.  You can also pick up prepared food from Contempo at Heinen's Grocery.
-Skip right on by Lax & Mandel bakery.  Nothing worthwhile there although if you are desperate the stuff that Heinen's resells from Lax & Mandel seems to be fresher than directly from them.

The parks in Cleveland are very nice. I took this video on my cell phone next to one of the park's parking lots

Not sure. My wife took me there during sheva brachos. Quite romantic taking cover together. I do remember it was very big. There was a lake and a lot of basketball courts. Don't know if that narrows it down at all

Looks like Cleveland Heights or East Cleveland to me...you can tell your wife is from the hood as us beachwood kids would be too scared to venture out that way :D

Top It Off is Kaput.
Good riddance as far as I'm concerned...also known as don't mess over your "best customer" time and time again and expect to survive.

Also worth noting that Chef Dave is having one of his specialty buffets this sunday.  His last one that I went to was worth every penny.  His price includes tax and there's no need to tip.  The ambiance is probably as good as it gets in CLE.
Hope he keeps making them for a long time!
