Think of Moving?

Airports:
  • CLE is about 15 minutes from downtown and 25-30 minutes from the Jewish community.  It's a focus city for Frontier, Spirit, and United.
  • The RTA (Rapid transit train) at Brookpark station has free parking and is just 1 train stop (3 minutes) to the stop inside the airport. The train costs $2.50 and the schedule is here: http://www.riderta.com/routes/redline/schedules/current#WestboundWeekday
An uber from Brookpark station to CLE is about $10.

  • The nicest hotel in Cleveland is like the Ritz-Carlton downtown. Marriott's Metropolitan at The 9 is also highly regarded, with a bar in an old vault. There is also a Hilton, Westin, and Kimpton downtown.

Transportation:
  • There is a subway/light rail connecting the airport with downtown, University Circle (where the Case campus and many museums are) and the Jewish community area, but renting a car is pretty much required unless you are just going between the airport and downtown.

Do they have like a menu or something for their bakery?
LOL, doesn't exist. This place is still frozen in the 1950s.
What specifically do you want to know?

Hi all,

My wife, seven children (newborn to 12 years) bl"h and I are seriously considering moving to Cleveland at the end of this summer (from Israel). I've been looking online at properties for sale in Beachwood, UH and CH and there are several that could be a fit. Can anyone here direct me to specific blocks that I should be looking at for a potential home? Which city would be recommended to someone new moving in from EY? Can anyone recommend a realtor or agent that is familiar with a frum family's needs? Is there anyone who lives in one of these cities who would be willing to speak to me about these and other questions?

My parents and siblings live in CA, but we can't realistically afford to live there. Cleveland seems like a wonderful community to raise our kids and is still relatively affordable. I would love to be in touch with community members who can help me out.

I can't help you with any info but i can tell you that i have a few friends and my brother as well, moved from EY to Cleveland and they are super satisfied with the friendly people, the out of town atmosphere, the shuls and schools, the vouchers, and the weather.

You need a realtor here more than anywhere else. The vast majority of home sales are done off market through realtors or word of mouth.

Personally I've only bought and sold through word of mouth, but people I know that moved here have used:
Tzipora Sonnenschein 216-406-9109
Coby Socher 216-258-9951
Gavi Septon 216-262-4700

The Beachwood/UH community is wonderful and diverse with dozens of shuls to choose from, but I can't speak for CH.

Hatzlacha!

Thanks for the reply. Just out of curiosity, do you know which part of Cleveland they moved to? Did they buy a house or are they renting? It seems like your friends' and brother's sentiments are shared by many other people who have moved there.

Thanks so much for that info, it should really come in handy! From what I have seen so far, the homes in CH seem to be cheaper, but also older. Do you know of any employment opportunities that I can look into or anyone in the frum community that assists newcomers with employment? I have a strong background in the wine industry -- is there a nice kosher wine store in the area or is there possibly a demand for such a business there?

I believe they moved to the Heights. I don't know who you are but they are all Chareidi types, from American Chareidi to Israeli Chareidi.

Is there a local kosher wine store?

Grove, Ungers, Grand Judaica, Franks, Boris, and Tibors all sell wine. Try calling to see if they would deliver.
Is there potential in the Cleveland area to open a kosher wine bar serving light food in a good atmosphere and selling other specialty products? Is the community large enough to support such a business?

IMIO (In My Ignorant Opinion), the atmosphere there is out of town and really not the foodie type that you see all over NY and NJ.

Dan enjoys a good meal, (and he's always encouraging people to open up places with good food,) but he's an exception to the Cleveland rule...

Again, this is the feeling I got from when i speak to my contacts living there and they are all the oot type...

(This is anecdotal and skewed based on who you know). There are definitely plenty people who would appreciate something like that. I still am not sure that it would be enough to support a business.

I don't see it surviving unless the food is good enough it gets goyim to come in.

Lol, same attitude that scared people away from opening a restaurant, and yet Mendels is full every night at the restaurant and ballpark and is opening a dairy restaurant now as well.

Yes, there is certainly potential for something like this.

Aside from Mendel's, no restaurants here offer a good atmosphere.

Mendel's relies on non Jews eating there and the ballpark.

What non-jew is paying high prices for worse wine?

ETA: does this exist anywhere in the US?

Mendel's does not rely on non-Jews to turn a profit, it's a small percentage.

I don't know, but I'd like to hear more about the concept.

Lol, same attitude that scared people away from opening a restaurant, and yet Mendels is full every night at the restaurant and ballpark and is opening a dairy restaurant now as well.
Why is there so many more Pizza places then restaurants? Because even non-restaurant people will go out for pizza for supper, when mommy has a baby, or for a special occasion. Same with a BBQ place, even if its a bit more money. People will go out for supper or Grandma will take the family out when she visits.

But a wine bar does not fit that description. It needs the right clientele. And maybe Manhattan is full of these places but in Cleveland its hard to see it working.

Born and bred Clevelander here who rarely comes back (as my parents moved away).
I came in this past weekend and was rather disappointed to not be able to go to Mendels as they are closed Friday, closed Motzei Shabbos and closed Sunday until dinnertime.
I'm glad they are allegedly doing well but this seems to be typical Cleveland food establishment syndrome.
On the East Coast, such a place would be open more.

If it's just wine, perhaps.
If it has tapas and desserts that are good enough to draw a crowd and enjoy together with some wine and/or cocktails, I can certainly see that working.
