Renting a Polestar from Hertz, anything I need to know?
« on: October 04, 2023, 12:48:47 PM »
I plan on renting a Polestar 2 for a 330 mile road trip. I checked https://abetterrouteplanner.com/ which suggested making two stops to charge one for 15 minutes and one for 21 minutes. Doesn't sound too bad to me.

This is my first time renting an electric vehicle. Anything I should know before I do this?

Also can anyone confirm that I will receive a wall charger for charging at home? I'm renting from Hertz.

Also download the plugshare app, so you can check those charging locations and make sure that they are actually up and running.

Another thing to remember is that those charging times are in optimal conditions. Sometimes the chargers are broken, sometimes they're completely full and you have to wait until someone else finishes. Also allow extra time for the learning curve factor. If you know what brand of charger it will be, it'll probably be easier to download that brand's app ahead of time, and enter in payment information.

One final comment, I don't know if it includes the charger for charging at home, but note that those would be on a 110 volt plug (known as a Level 1 charger), and to get any meaningful charge, it can take a good 24 to 48 hours to get a full charge if you're empty.

Was in this car yesterday. For an electric car I wasn't impressed

Important to note, The battery life should be no less than 80% upon return, or a $35 fee will apply.. another fee applies if it is less than 20%

That's assuming it's being plugged into a wall box, which is a level two charger. If you scroll further down, you'll see that it says that it can take 5 hours to get just 40 miles of range added on a regular household outlet. It's been a while since I checked, but when I plugged it into my outlet, I think I was getting 1.3 kilowatts. With my current car (an ioniq 5) and 48 amp wall box charger, I can get 16KW.

Wall outlets typically get 1.4kW. 48 hours is enough time to go from 0-100%
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

From my experience they get more like 1.2kW.

Regardless, it should be more than adequate. Even if it's the long range with the 82 kilowatt battery, there's no way he's going from 0 to 100 %. In 48 hours at 1.2 kilowatts, you would get a 57 kilowatts, which is 70% of the battery capacity of the long range Polestar.

If the outlet is bad, it will reduct the amperage. Normally it gets 12A x 120V = 1.44kW.

You do you. There's a learning curve, no denying it, but once you get it, you get it. It's the same thing with playing the credit card game for points. But since reading up on all the Dan's deals credit card knowledge bases, I've been able to score hundreds of thousands of points and taken several trips. Had I refused to learn how to do it all, I wouldn't have been able to earn the points.

it's a matter of what's the alternative. Id rather just drive gas car and know that any time I need to refuel, I could find a station within a few miles and fill up a tank within 5 minutes.

If you own an EV, you rarely need to stop to refuel. You leave every day with a full charge at home.

For long trips, I recently drove my M3 RT from Lakewood to Montreal, I needed to stop twice each way, and the car was ready before my baby was ready at each stop. There are superchargers every 20-30 miles the whole way, except for the stretch before the border where it's 60 or so miles. Whenever my baby was ready to eat we stopped to charge.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

What i found renting both an EV and a Tesla is that tesla have way more places to charge and much faster... I was frustrated with a regular EV with the slowness and lack of places

Valid point, and one of the reasons I ended up buying the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

A Tesla model Y can accept a charging rate of up to 210 KW. An Ioniq 5 can accept rates of up to 234 KW.

For similar cars, the Polestar 2 can only accept rates of up to 133 kW. The VW ID4, 125 kW. The Mustang Mach E 110-150kW (depending on the model).

It can mean the difference between 15 to 30 minutes based on what car you have. And the smaller ones are even slower at the DC fast chargers. So like I said, definitely a learning curve for new EV drivers.
