This is an impossible decision to make. On the one hand, we know how awful these deals turn out, OTOH, how can you say no to releasing 53 hostages?! The mistake, IMHO, is negotiating in the first place. The official policy is "We don't negotiate with terrorists", but then we we always do.

The families of the remaining hostages will be fuming after a deal is done, these 50 get released, the pressure will be much stronger. They will scream for anything to be done to release their family members.

Form the same article - doesn’t this contradict?

“Hamas also specified that the pause in fighting would entail "a total suspension of Israeli flights over Gaza, except in the northern areas where Israel will limit flights to six hours daily."

Oh... that's the pshat?

I thought it was to give the Hamas leaders a chance to save themselves and flee like cowards while their grunts get killed...

Surprised that I am not seeing any Halacha articles discussing, I would think there is halachos about this? Surely this has come up in the past over the years, this isnt the first hostage scenario unfortunately.

Dr. Roi Yozevitch has a lot of clarity on many topics, I discovered him on YouTube after October 7th. Here’s what he has to say about the hostage exchange:

There are Tshuvos about it. But now we have a better idea of how dangerous it is to release terrorists.

It's very possible that the recent massacre (and kidnappings) would never have happened if they had followed Halacha in the past.

There is a lot of pressure from the families of the hostages. They want their relatives home and are not thinking about future consequences to other Jews. That puts a lot of pressure on the people who are negotiating...

R' Daniel Gladstein has a frightening shiur about Gaza, I believe he quotes kadmonim/medrashim how we were punished for making peace with plishtim...

If it’s against Halacha why are the religious parties voting for the deal?

Shas consulted with their Daas Torah and were told to put their 6 votes for the deal because of the grave danger the hostages are in.

Just came across this in my email

https://jewishreviewofbooks.com/israel/15128/rabbi-ovadia-yosef-and-the-halakhot-of-hostages-part-2/
Fascinating. There is a lot in his Teshuva.

It's not so simple to apply it to today.

For example, he wrote, that the hostages were certainly in danger while the release of terrorists is a potential danger has now been flipped. Today, the hostages don't appear to be in great danger, in fact, they have been treated well so that they can be used as currency in negotiations. While we now have more experience with the danger of releasing of existing terrorists...

Many poskim permit freeing terrorists to free hostages.

Honestly surprised here, dozens of innocents being released for a temporary deal is huge. So Hamas will “regroup”? They had weeks before the invasion anyway, hard to believe they can cause catastrophic differences because of the deal.

I'm shocked someone can even consider this sensible. They are in the hands of terrorists who we know killed at least 2 or 3 of them besides for the 1200 killed on Simchas Torah.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.
