Was wondering if Israel would use bunker busters, considering the damage they would cause. It may sound heartless to say, but I'm glad they did. Trying to destroy that terrorist HQ without them likely would have killed even more people, even if the optics wouldn't have been this bad

Would it be reasonable to think some hostages are also at these sites? How much should that change the equation?

Of course it would be reasonable. Logically, I want to say not at all. the hostages preventing Israel from finishing the job will cause far more death and destruction in the long run. But it is an impossible decision to make being that we don't operate solely on logic.

It’s hard for laypeople like us to even say whether (or to what extent) Israel does or doesn’t have intelligence to make that assessment.

I just feel the hostages should be a major part of the equation and maybe it is.
There is a movie "Eye in the sky" that takes you through the process if a target should be taken out. Worth a watch as it shows all sides of the decision.
