Charge friend's car rental on my CC? To Do or not to do?
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:02:00 AM »
My friend asked me how I feel about him charging his Israeli car rental on my Chase Sapphire Preferred points so he can get the CDW insurance waived. I was wondering as follows:

1. Could he use my card if I'm not going to be listed with the car rental company as driver?
2. Does he have to show my card when he picks up the car?
3. Is there any liability/exposure to me if anything happens to the car?
4. If yes to #3, how much exposure?

Nope.
Yup.
The car itself should be covered by CDW..

Why not order an AU for him?

So as long as he pays me for the car rental up front and the card doesn't get used for anything else, there's no risk to me?

There's no risk for the car itself.  And liability is mandatory in Israel so that should be OK as well.
But if he injures/kills someone c"v can I guarantee they won't find out the credit card belongs to you and try to sue you?  Nope.
That being said I would add a friend as an AU for this purpose.

NP.
Don't forget to get a letter of coverage from MasterRental to give to your friend to show the car rental agency if needed.

Why not? The cc covers collision.  In this instance th cc won't cover CDW bec its not under the renters name.

Sue the card holder? How does he get involved? The name on the contract is responsible,  what does it have anything to do with the name on cc that was used?

It might be worth verifying it with Chase.
I recently dealt with Chase enhancement services regarding a travel claim, and was told that only PRIMARY cardholders are covered, unlike by Amex.

I believe that is incorrect.
Are you speaking from experience?  Do you mind elaborating on your recent story?

I wish that is incorrect.
I purchased plane tickets for my friend (he wasnt an au) with my card, he had cancellations and delays that would have been covered by their coverage, but a few reps and supervisor told me that coverage is only for primary cardholders or spouse.

they are right by flights but thats not the case by rentals as it usually says clearly that as long as the 2nd driver is on the rental he is covered as well.

We aren't discussing whether additional drivers are covered.  We are discussing if/when an AU is primary renter on the vehicle.

Are you trying to make a kol vi'chomer - maduch additional drivers are covered and they aren't even an AU, kol she'kain if he's an AU he should be covered (although he's primary).

Not sure that the cc company will accept a kv when making a claim - but I am sure that AU's are covered by the cc CDW.

-1 CCs do cover AUs and IIRC it even says so clearly in the Ts &Cs.

Read the post before the one I quoted. AsherO is talking about a scenario where the cc borrower is not an AU.

That's true, but it's already been suggested I add him...

Even if you're right, that doesn't explain if I'm on the hook (and for how much) or if the signer on the rental agreement is liable?

Even if you're right, that doesn't explain if I'm on the hook (and for how much) or if the signer on the rental agreement is liable?

I'm not particularly familiar with rentals in Israel, but let me explain how it generally works.

When renting a car the rental agency requires a cc on file.  Reason being that in case you damage the vehicle and
A) You didn't buy insurance from the agency
B) Your cc CDW isn't covering due to any one of many reasons
they will be able to bill you without worrying that you can't pay - they just bill all the charges to the cc on file.

With that said, let me try to answer your questions.

In order for the cc's CDW to cover the rental,   the name on the cc must match the primary renters name listed on the contract.  If it matches, it will cover all additional drivers listed on the contract as well.

The also applies to  AU credit cards. If the AU uses his card and he is the primary renter, it will cover.

Regarding the rental agency, (in a scenario where insurance doesn't cover)  they will bill the cc on file for the damages wether or not it matches the name on the contract.

Does this  answer any/all of your questions?
