In the basic buy vs rent argument:
Rents go up over time.  Your 30 year fixed mortgage doesn't.  Although your taxes and other expenses also go up.
You've been comparing the prices of both at this time.  One won't be changing much over the next 30  years, the other likely will.

My taxes and insurance have almost doubled to well over 1k a month over the last decade. My maintenance costs have shot up as well. Rent has definitely gone up more but I doubt the current discrepancy of almost double will pay off vs investing the 50k in annual savings from renting new construction rather than buying on a purely financial basis. That’s not even figuring in the 200k plus down payment being invested instead as well. Of course there’s the forced savings and psychological aspect of ownership for some.
