Venishmartem?
« on: December 03, 2023, 09:36:03 PM »
This is an offshoot of my earlier quibbling

This isn't an attack on the frum community which *drum roll* I'm a member. Just a frustrated venting.

I don't want to rehash there earlier article that talked about safety vis a vis guns and kids.

Every day I witness frum kids, often in black pants, black jacket even black hats zipping the middle of the street at night(!!!) In 🛴 and it's nigh impossible to see them

I applaud the ones (a small % wearing vests and helmets) although I still think it's a tremendous danger

Meanwhile, I witness parents driving kids around in souped up golf carts, kids who if in a car would require a car seat etc and just have a seat belt in the golf cart

You may argue that everyone does it and nothing's happened.

When it comes to guns I personally Do not know a single story. First hand of a kid in frum community who used a gun but i can name at least rachmana litzlan 10 kids who lo aleinu drowned.

Why do we have pools? And golf carts and scooters.

To paraphrase the prior topic was quoted "it's not a yiddishe Zach"

Yes our ancestors didn't much have guns but then what happened.. they didn't either have pools or golf carts or scooters

Primarily the scooters make me bonkers. You mamash can't see them and these 13/14 year olds are even at times wearing headphones zipping down the street

The scooters terrify me. I wish the community I live in would make some sort of takanos about it. I've seen kids get injured a couple of times (not by a car) but I feel like it's a disaster waiting to happen lo aleinu.

1) Yes, scooters and pools can be dangerous.
2) Some parents are negligent and allow their children to be in dangerous situations with these.
2) Talking in Shul is also dangerous.

In Monsey the latest mishigas is bochrim riding around ebikes that are essentially motorcycles. Black jacket, no light, no reflectors, wrong side of the road, and obviously no helmets. I nearly killed someone last week.

Guns are considered by some as a “goyisha Zach” because they can and are used offensively to hurt/kill/maim and conquer.

Not because they are risky.

Danger is terrible, but it cannot be labeled as goyish. It’s a separate issue.

Lots of ideas conflated with one another.

My view - guns are not goyish, they’re a tool with a useful purpose. Gun culture is goyish.

Scooters, electric skateboards, and bikes are not safe modes of transportation in Lakewood even with reflective vest. The roads are simply not built safe for it. With proper precautions some riders might be safe in other cities.

So, guns are like many things. It's like saying all the fancy cars in the frum world are goyish

Guns can kill but are also for self defense .
Knives can kill and cook dinner .

Cars are to get you from point a to b, who needs an Escalade?

Scooters are beyond dangerous. You simply cannot see them and why is one looking for scooters in the middle of the road

I got around Brooklyn on a bike (no motor) for 15 years. (Manhattan, too, over the Bklyn Bridge.) Still, one year of biking in Yerushalayim taught me that in Brooklyn, I had not truly been riding safely. Add a motor? Insane. If you would read the biking laws (they exist), you would quickly see that no one on a bike follows the law. (Examples include crossing the street only when a car is permitted to, riding only on the right side of the lane, helmets (obv), not passing a bus or truck at all - and certainly not on the left!)
When I started following all those, I felt the difference bechush. But maybe that's just me.
I know my mother considered bikers (of both sorts) to be the most dangerous of anything one encounters while driving. She would constantly point out to us when someone was acting unsafe on the road so we would learn not to imitate them...

Almost killed a kid in lakewood on this. Never saw it before but if it’s a new craze we’re in trouble. It’s so low to the ground you really can’t see it.

Any way to pass a law in lkwd that certain bikes and scooters need to be registered and you need some type of permit (training) to ride it?
How would we get this off the ground?
Would starting a petition with signatures be the right way?

Those laws probably already exist and these vehicles aren’t legal.

This. It’s gun culture, not guns per se. I’ve taken my kids to the gun range numerous times as a bein hazmanim/ summer activity, as well as the idea that it’s not a bad idea for them to be familiar with how to use a gun. If I saw a hint of them developing an affinity toward “gun culture” I would stop taking them immediately.

Just saw a kid who could not have an older than 13 on a scooter at night. Wearing black pants and a blue shirt. No helmet.

It's absolutely terrifying to think about the overtime work. The protective angels have to put in here
