Which Thinkpad to buy?
« on: December 17, 2023, 08:36:03 AM »
I want to buy a Thinkpad laptop, for it's keyboard. I can manage with 16 RAM and probably with 8, and I would prefer a yoga but not a must.
I have 4 options (for new, under $650):

1. Lenovo website  ThinkPad L14 Gen 3 AMD (14”) - Thunder Black - $589.00, [their Est Value: $2,688.00]
[Processor: AMD Ryzen™ 5 PRO, Windows 11 Pro 64, Memory: 16 GB DDR4-3200MHz, Storage: 512 GB SSD]
This is not a yoga, but they claim it' on a %78 discount, and I have 3 year Lenovo warranty.
Does Lenovo's Est. value mean much?

2. On Amazon, ThinkPad L13 Yoga 2-in-1 11th Gen Intel 4-Core i5-1145G7 >i7-1165G7 | 16GB DDR4 512GB SSD  3-yr Warranty - $599
This is a yoga, i5. But the seller is not very relyable. it does have a warranty, though. Should I be concerned about the sellers just %65 positive rate?

3. On Amazon, ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen2 2-in-18-Core Ryzen7Pro 5850U >i7-1265U 16GB RAM 512GB SSD - $609
This is an i7, but no warranty. This seller also has a just %65 positive rate.

4. On Amazon, ThinkPad X13 Gen 2, AMD 6-core Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U (>i7-1165G7),16GB DDR4 512GB SSD 3-Year Warranty + 32GB MicroSD Card - $629.
This is a yoga, i7, with warrenty, seller not very reliable.

5. ThinkPad Yoga 11e Gen 5 2-in-1  11.6" HD N5030 Processor 8GB RAM 1TB SSD Intel UHD Graphics 605 USB-C Pen Win11 = $549
This is only 8 RAM, small screen and no warranty.

Or is it better to just stick to the one on Lenovo's website, not yoga for it's reliability and %78 discount?

I appreciate any feedback! Thanks

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but if you are buying a Thinkpad for their famous keyboard, the L series does not qualify.
As for the rest, I wouldn't buy a Lenovo laptop from the equivalent of used cars salesmen. Maybe you'll like the keyboard. Read the relevant section  of this review: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-L14-G3-AMD-laptop-review-Long-battery-life-plus-AMD-power.662866.0.html#toc-3

If I see something decent I'll post on the laptop deals thread.

I avoid Chinese technology items, so it's an easy answer.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Thanks a lot! So I am not going to by the 'doorbuster %78 off' then.
Do you know which series do have their faomous keyboard?
And regarding the different types of thinkpad keyboards, how can I differentiate between them from the discriptions?
(Spoiler: I am not used to this keyboard yet, I just heard that it's superb, and the keyboard is the most important of the laptop to me.)

You are saying that all Lenovo are "Chinese technology items"?
The Thinkpad is supposed to be good quality, thogh.
What affordable yoga laptops are better?

Lenovo is a Chinese company. No two ways about it.

They might have great laptops, but I will avoid them.

LG is Korean
Acer is Taiwanese
ASUS is Taiwanese
HP is American
Dell is American
Microsoft is American
Apple is American

What about components?

אין לדבר סוף.

However I think when you have major technology firms designing, testing, and assembling devices, there's less chance of Chinese (CCP) spying/infiltration due to a component being made in China. They won't risk losing Apple's business.

I buy Chinese so if they're spying it should be on me rather than him :P

T-Series and Z-Series, and some X-series models (not the X1 Nano I just posted). The main differentiator is the depth of key travel, so if the reviewer calls it "shallow" you know that aint it. I imagine these are out of your budget. The L-series model you found is regular price, so far as I can recall.
You can consider the Pavilion Plus, I have one person who bought it and is ecstatic. I may do some looking around and see if anything is more exciting. I'll be posting on the Laptop Deals thread.

The Lenovo ThinkPad offers exceptional quality and value that you won't find with any other company. If you're willing to spend extra for the HP logo, you could simply purchase the logo separately.

As for concerns about spying, it's worth noting that the Chinese may pose a risk. If you're involved in sensitive sectors like banking or work for the CIA, you might want to consider American-made alternatives :D

i would advise you to go with 2. On Amazon, ThinkPad L13 Yoga 2-in-1 11th Gen Intel 4-Core i5-1145G7 >i7-1165G7 | 16GB DDR4 512GB SSD  3-yr Warranty - $599
This is a yoga, i5. But the seller is not very reliable. it does have a warranty, though
