Southwest Companion Pass.

What is it:

The SW CP is arguably the most valuable airline perk available today. It allows you to bring a companion with you for free on any Southwest flight, regardless of whether you are on a revenue or award ticket. All you pay are the government taxes on the ticket. The pass works for all Southwest flights, including international flights. The pass also works on Airtran flights that are sold on Southwest.com. Airtran flights that are not sold on Southwest.com are not eligible.
Like all other Southwest award bookings, the CP is not subject to any capacity controls, and as long as there is still a seat for sale on a particular flight, it is yours.
The pass is valid for the year it is earned in and the entire next calendar year. If you earned your CP in July 2014, your pass will be valid for the remainder of 2014 and the entirety of 2015.

How to get it:

The SW CP is obtained by earning 125,000 Southwest points in one calendar year. For example, if you earned 8k points by flying at the beginning of 2014, you need to earn another 117k points throughout the rest of 2014 in order to qualify for CP. Once 2015 rolls around, the points you've earned in 2014 no longer qualify for earning your CP, although they will still be redeemable points.

The primary method of accumulating Southwest points is CC signup bonuses. The Southwest CC frequently offers 50k point signup bonuses on all 4 flavors of Southwest cards and signup bonuses count towards earning the CP. Get approved for 2 of these cards, meet the 2k spending requirement on each and you are only 21k points away from the CP.

All points earned through the Rapid Rewards shopping mall also count towards SW CP eligibility.
Points transferred from Hyatt, Club Carlson, Marriott, and Wyndham all count towards CP status.
Points transferred from Ultimate Rewards do not count towards CP, although you can transfer can transfer 50K Ultimate Rewards points into 50K Hyatt and 50K Hyatt transfers into 30K Southwest.

Points earned by crediting hotel stays and car rentals to Southwest also count towards CP.

Using the CP:

Using your CP is very simple. Once you book a flight on Southwest, an "Add a companion" button will appear under your reservation. Just fill out the info and pay the taxes and you are done.
It is best to add your companion right when you book your own flight as there have been instances where people have forgotten to add their companion, the flight subsequently sold out and they were not able to add their companion. One thing to keep in mind is that online changes with a companion booked are not possible, you need to cancel the companion, wait 10-15 min, make the change and then add the companion again. You can make the necessary changes over the phone though.
You can change your companion up to 3 times during the life of your CP. (I believe you can change it 3 times per calendar year.)

As soon as your point threshold goes above 110K it instantly reflects CP?

Even if I use some miles the same day it hits 110K?

No worky like that. Need to earn 110k in the calendar year. Can use the miles before you earn the rest
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

That I know.

But I believe I made a return on personal card (reducing my mileage by a few hundred), but two days prior to that statement closing, the business card will award me what I need to break 110K.

Just want to make sure I'll be awarded CP before the business personal statement closes and the several hundred miles get clawed back.

Waiting on 52k to post from sw premier and my CP to kick in, statement closed 1/26 but miles didn't post yet. Would love to close the premier and get the $99 back but will be tight as I'm approaching 60 days (fee hit 12/1)

Update: Miles and cp posted 1/28, closed and got the refund check a few weeks later.

If you hit 110k (2 business days after biz card statement closes) prior to personal statement with clawback closing, yes you will be awarded CP.

If I'm reading you right the question is, would they clawback the cp? Let's say you opened a 50k card and bought 60,000 in items, got the cp, then returned the items. Do you keep the cp? Idk the answer to this.

Wow, this is officially the best perk in CC travel. I knew it was good, but it gets whole lot cooler once you actually redeem for it.

Two people, transcon, for 20K and $20. Total.

Can anyone say "weekend trips to the bahamas until 2016?"  ;D

Easily my favorite perk! Both my wife and I have the CP so we can bring both kids free.

What routing are you using to get from NYC to NAS? Are you booking separate flights to connect or were you able to get the whole trip on a single itinerary?

Haven't yet booked NAS, but after my flawless experience an hour ago, you bet I will be.

AFAIK, they don't yet publish NYC-NAS.

I assume you mean non-stop.

But, no, that's impossible.

When they have non-stop, that will put it over the top IMHO.

Having some "warmer" destinations is great, but a NY-LAX/West Coast flight would be even better.

The connection going from NY-LAX is annoying but manageable, but the return sucks since there are no red eye flights since nothing is direct. You need to lose a day traveling.

Not sure they'll ever run a non-stop and compete against the legacies.

Yah, that is a downside. But I may just refund the return and build it into an AA F award and fly the A321T back.

Exactly my issue i had in August.

The pricing cannot be beat.Though the idea of having the latest flight out of LAX at ~12:30 is where it gets me.

Doesn't help that my flights were all delayed, but that can happen with any airline.

That sounds like a nice option.

The flight to LA is doable with a stop because of the time change. The way back just kills a day (though if you can work remotely, it was only $8 i believe inflight).

This Monday is a big day... Schedule opens through 10/31/2014.

Need to book some trips for the holiday weekends in September and October and was hoping to include a trip to one of the new Caribbean destinations. My CP expires 12/31/2014 so I need to pack everything in before year end.

I can always book the trip to BWI and then separately to AUA or MBJ but it is more expensive to book it like that. Maybe if I call them can do it manually.

Just did NAS with AA and would love to go back. Atlantis was great but would recommend going off season when the prices are more reasonable.

Looks like it is between $67 and $106 in taxes and fees to fly to these destinations.

Still not bad if getting one ticket free.
