Southwest Companion Pass.

What is it:

The SW CP is arguably the most valuable airline perk available today. It allows you to bring a companion with you for free on any Southwest flight, regardless of whether you are on a revenue or award ticket. All you pay are the government taxes on the ticket. The pass works for all Southwest flights, including international flights. The pass also works on Airtran flights that are sold on Southwest.com. Airtran flights that are not sold on Southwest.com are not eligible.
Like all other Southwest award bookings, the CP is not subject to any capacity controls, and as long as there is still a seat for sale on a particular flight, it is yours.
The pass is valid for the year it is earned in and the entire next calendar year. If you earned your CP in July 2014, your pass will be valid for the remainder of 2014 and the entirety of 2015.

How to get it:

The SW CP is obtained by earning 125,000 Southwest points in one calendar year. For example, if you earned 8k points by flying at the beginning of 2014, you need to earn another 117k points throughout the rest of 2014 in order to qualify for CP. Once 2015 rolls around, the points you've earned in 2014 no longer qualify for earning your CP, although they will still be redeemable points.

The primary method of accumulating Southwest points is CC signup bonuses. The Southwest CC frequently offers 50k point signup bonuses on all 4 flavors of Southwest cards and signup bonuses count towards earning the CP. Get approved for 2 of these cards, meet the 2k spending requirement on each and you are only 21k points away from the CP.

All points earned through the Rapid Rewards shopping mall also count towards SW CP eligibility.
Points transferred from Hyatt, Club Carlson, Marriott, and Wyndham all count towards CP status.
Points transferred from Ultimate Rewards do not count towards CP, although you can transfer can transfer 50K Ultimate Rewards points into 50K Hyatt and 50K Hyatt transfers into 30K Southwest.

Points earned by crediting hotel stays and car rentals to Southwest also count towards CP.

Using the CP:

Using your CP is very simple. Once you book a flight on Southwest, an "Add a companion" button will appear under your reservation. Just fill out the info and pay the taxes and you are done.
It is best to add your companion right when you book your own flight as there have been instances where people have forgotten to add their companion, the flight subsequently sold out and they were not able to add their companion. One thing to keep in mind is that online changes with a companion booked are not possible, you need to cancel the companion, wait 10-15 min, make the change and then add the companion again. You can make the necessary changes over the phone though.
You can change your companion up to 3 times during the life of your CP. (I believe you can change it 3 times per calendar year.)

I think this is the right thread for this...
looking to top off for my SW CP; I transfered 10K UR to Hyatt. I would like to now transfer those to 4800 SW. those 10K are the only points in the Hyatt account.
problem is: the dropdown on Hyatt only lets me transfer up to 8,750.
Does hyatt not let you transfer out your last points? If I do 2 increments of 5K would that work better? or will I need to blow another 1K UR to make it work?
update: transfered 5K, it's still allowing we to transfer the next 5K. weird.
any idea if it's safe to do the 2nd 5K now, same day as the 1st? or am I risking SW seeing it as duplicate or something?

I will hopefully achieve CP by next week. However, I would like to book flights now so that I don't lose availability. Am I able to use points and book for 2 now and once I achieve CP get points back for the second booked flight as my companion? Would it affect my CP status next week since if I use points now I would be under the 110k threshold?

you can book even 1 flight now and add the companion later. or, if you're not sure the pass will come through in time, book 2 now, then later cancel the 2nd (full points refund) and add companion

no. CP is 110 earned total in 1 calendar year, not necessarily in the account at one time. the reverse is true as well.

Thanks. I want to book 2 just to make sure their is availability since it is around pessach time. Would that work to basically reserve the seat for later when I cancel?

If I book 2 tickets, does that guaranty availability for my companion when I cancel and request refund on points for the second seat later on when I get companion pass?

I'm in the same boat. Booked two tix bc a great deal, and my CP will activate after.

So as long as there's any seat available on the plane you should be able to add a companion.

I actually called SW and they said they can switch my ticket that was booked with points to a companion seat no problem and refund me the points once I get CP.

very interesting -- I thought that you had to book the CP at the same time as making the first person's ticket.

I will probably call again just to make sure, but based on first call you can switch someone from reservation to companion if booked with points.

makes sense, especially if SW lets you switch rr flights so close to departures, etc...

No need to book companion at time of original booking.

Provided there is a seat on the plane for sale, you can add CP at any time up until basically departure.

So I can just book 2 seats with points, then they will refund 1/2 the points when CP is added?

Can you also cancel at anytime?

You don't even *need* to book both, but you can as a placeholder.

Yes. Up until ten mins before.

Which one might do if they're scared the flight will be completely sold out by the time they get CP status.

Yup, I booked 2 and one as a placeholder because I am using it on Pessach to go to Miami, so didn't want to take chances.
