Southwest Companion Pass.

What is it:

The SW CP is arguably the most valuable airline perk available today. It allows you to bring a companion with you for free on any Southwest flight, regardless of whether you are on a revenue or award ticket. All you pay are the government taxes on the ticket. The pass works for all Southwest flights, including international flights. The pass also works on Airtran flights that are sold on Southwest.com. Airtran flights that are not sold on Southwest.com are not eligible.
Like all other Southwest award bookings, the CP is not subject to any capacity controls, and as long as there is still a seat for sale on a particular flight, it is yours.
The pass is valid for the year it is earned in and the entire next calendar year. If you earned your CP in July 2014, your pass will be valid for the remainder of 2014 and the entirety of 2015.

How to get it:

The SW CP is obtained by earning 125,000 Southwest points in one calendar year. For example, if you earned 8k points by flying at the beginning of 2014, you need to earn another 117k points throughout the rest of 2014 in order to qualify for CP. Once 2015 rolls around, the points you've earned in 2014 no longer qualify for earning your CP, although they will still be redeemable points.

The primary method of accumulating Southwest points is CC signup bonuses. The Southwest CC frequently offers 50k point signup bonuses on all 4 flavors of Southwest cards and signup bonuses count towards earning the CP. Get approved for 2 of these cards, meet the 2k spending requirement on each and you are only 21k points away from the CP.

All points earned through the Rapid Rewards shopping mall also count towards SW CP eligibility.
Points transferred from Hyatt, Club Carlson, Marriott, and Wyndham all count towards CP status.
Points transferred from Ultimate Rewards do not count towards CP, although you can transfer can transfer 50K Ultimate Rewards points into 50K Hyatt and 50K Hyatt transfers into 30K Southwest.

Points earned by crediting hotel stays and car rentals to Southwest also count towards CP.

Using the CP:

Using your CP is very simple. Once you book a flight on Southwest, an "Add a companion" button will appear under your reservation. Just fill out the info and pay the taxes and you are done.
It is best to add your companion right when you book your own flight as there have been instances where people have forgotten to add their companion, the flight subsequently sold out and they were not able to add their companion. One thing to keep in mind is that online changes with a companion booked are not possible, you need to cancel the companion, wait 10-15 min, make the change and then add the companion again. You can make the necessary changes over the phone though.
You can change your companion up to 3 times during the life of your CP. (I believe you can change it 3 times per calendar year.)

With the way Southwest's seating works, unless the flight is completely sold out, you should be able to get a seat for your infant as they allow families to preboard and no one will know whether you purchased a seat or not unless they need your infant's seat for a paying passenger.

But the airline workers ask to scan your boarding pass prior to boarding. If I cancelled my infants "full seat ticket", that ticket wouldnt' work, and I wouldn't have a lap child boarding pass to use. I would have to go out and check in again to get a new one. Unless the airline employees can do it for me behind the counter, the same counter I always go to get a gate check for my luggage, or make flights changes if flight is cancelled or delayed.

if you have no intention of paying for a seat for your infant, why not just make the ticket in someone else's name and cancel at the last minute.  This way you could have your lap child boarding pass and hopefully your "seat" as well (assuming the flight isn't oversold).

Interesting.

I wonder what the chances are that this would help me. Me experiences with SW flights have been either several empty seats or completely overbooked.

What if board as early as possible and try to cancel flight as I'm getting seated. I will still have 10 minutes prior to takeoff to make a telephone cancellation. I wonder if the stewardess will stop me from bringing my car seat on board saying: no empty seats available.

Now I understand why all other airlines charge hefty fees for cancellations.

Yup. SW actually has a pretty generous policy. On a point tickets you don't even need to cancel. The points jut redeposit into your account if you don't show. With their non-refundable tickets you need to cancel at least 10 min before flight to get a credit. Pretty crazy policy on their part.

Southwest credit card companion pass
« Reply #108 on: November 14, 2013, 03:47:20 PM »
I called Southwest and asked if the 50,000 bonus points go towards the companion pass situation once you accumilate 110,000 and he said that it DOES NOT. Only purchases will get me there.

Now I have two cards, but I am kind of disappointed (I am not blaming anyone for my mistake, just disappointed for not having done proper research.)

Dan, or anyone who may have any insight on the matter, did I misunderstand something in the post on Dansdeals?

Let's see.
We have something that thousands of people here have successfully done.
And we have a phone rep getting paid $6/hour and doesn't know a credit card from a debit card.

Who to believe?!?!?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Ok I understand that it can be done. Please shed some wisdom. After this upcoming statement of my current card I will have 53,000 points, then another personal cc coming in the mail next week ..

What do I do to get me the Elite or Rapid Rewards status?

And should I wait untill 2014 to accumilate the points?

You're better off holding off on reaching the $2,000 spend requirements until Dec so your 50k bonus will post in 2014 + additional 50k bonus from new card bec you need to earn 110,000 pts in one calendar year to be eligible for the companion pass. Then the 104,000 will post in Jan + additional spending to reach 110,000 total and the pass will be good through Dec 2015.

He may have already earned his 53,000 pts in 2013, so ineligible for earning the 110K in same calendar year if waits till Jan.

I'm in same boat.
I already have earned my 55K from SW #1, and I think that I need to finish the $5k spend this month with my SW#2 in order do earn the 110K in same calendar year --
(will need to drop the 2015 hopes, and only have comp pass for 2014).
Is this correct?

Yes :(
(Unless you're ready to open another card (a third) and hold off with your second until '14.)
