Southwest Companion Pass.

What is it:

The SW CP is arguably the most valuable airline perk available today. It allows you to bring a companion with you for free on any Southwest flight, regardless of whether you are on a revenue or award ticket. All you pay are the government taxes on the ticket. The pass works for all Southwest flights, including international flights. The pass also works on Airtran flights that are sold on Southwest.com. Airtran flights that are not sold on Southwest.com are not eligible.
Like all other Southwest award bookings, the CP is not subject to any capacity controls, and as long as there is still a seat for sale on a particular flight, it is yours.
The pass is valid for the year it is earned in and the entire next calendar year. If you earned your CP in July 2014, your pass will be valid for the remainder of 2014 and the entirety of 2015.

How to get it:

The SW CP is obtained by earning 125,000 Southwest points in one calendar year. For example, if you earned 8k points by flying at the beginning of 2014, you need to earn another 117k points throughout the rest of 2014 in order to qualify for CP. Once 2015 rolls around, the points you've earned in 2014 no longer qualify for earning your CP, although they will still be redeemable points.

The primary method of accumulating Southwest points is CC signup bonuses. The Southwest CC frequently offers 50k point signup bonuses on all 4 flavors of Southwest cards and signup bonuses count towards earning the CP. Get approved for 2 of these cards, meet the 2k spending requirement on each and you are only 21k points away from the CP.

All points earned through the Rapid Rewards shopping mall also count towards SW CP eligibility.
Points transferred from Hyatt, Club Carlson, Marriott, and Wyndham all count towards CP status.
Points transferred from Ultimate Rewards do not count towards CP, although you can transfer can transfer 50K Ultimate Rewards points into 50K Hyatt and 50K Hyatt transfers into 30K Southwest.

Points earned by crediting hotel stays and car rentals to Southwest also count towards CP.

Using the CP:

Using your CP is very simple. Once you book a flight on Southwest, an "Add a companion" button will appear under your reservation. Just fill out the info and pay the taxes and you are done.
It is best to add your companion right when you book your own flight as there have been instances where people have forgotten to add their companion, the flight subsequently sold out and they were not able to add their companion. One thing to keep in mind is that online changes with a companion booked are not possible, you need to cancel the companion, wait 10-15 min, make the change and then add the companion again. You can make the necessary changes over the phone though.
You can change your companion up to 3 times during the life of your CP. (I believe you can change it 3 times per calendar year.)

Why can't you book one ticket and add the companion when your pass becomes active?
I think that should work. When you book the companion you basically have it linked in your account and just go under your upcoming trips and add the companion that way. Of course, if no more tickets being sold on the flight then that won't work.

It will work. They'll actually bump people off the flight to get your companion on.

Sorry, a bit OT:
1) Is it still possible to sign up for personal and biz Southwest cards and get 100k points towards my 110k like that?
2)Is it possible to fly in Europe with my Southwest points and companion pass?

It is but the 50k bonus needs to come back first.
No.
ETA: Apparently it's still alive. https://creditcards.chase.com/a1/southwest/offer

I am short a few miles to qualify for the Southwest companion pass so I transferred from my Hyatt account into Southwest.
After I transfer it they say it takes 4-6 weeks?!

1. It goes faster.
2. They backdate.

I opened 2 southwest cards in Aug. spent the 10K and called chase before my statement closed to confirm that I actually spent the required amount and I reached the 110k pts. Chase CSR confirmed that I did.  My statement closed on 12/8 and I didn't hear from Southwest regarding the CP. When I called RR directly they said that not all my purchases qualified for CP (I think bec. I made some returns and they took back the points) and I only have 109,991 pts. The CSR said I can call customer care 214-932-0333 and see what they can do for me. I called now and they said they would give me the 9 pts needed to reach the 110k! (He said I was the closest he has seen yet to get the CP) So we're good to go!

I have no idea, but I hope your bonuses both hit in the same calendar year (preferably 2014)

I got 1 SW card back in may and got the 50k and I got another SW card @ the end of november and set the the statement for the 1st of the month which means the first statement would be jan 1st, if I got the 110k before jan 1st will I be able to get the companion pass at all? if yes, will it be for 2014 and 2015?

All 110K must post in the same calendar year, at which point your companion pass will count for the remainder of that calendar year and the following year.

If you want to count your 50K from may, you better get an additional 60K posted before Jan 1st (if you succeed, you will only have CP for remainder of 2013 and full 2014).  Otherwise, the CP counter resets and you'll need to get 110K in 2014 to get the CP for the remainder of 2014 and full 2015).

I just looked up the transfer I did earlier this year to complete CP. Initial transfer was 6/24. Southwest account shows them posted 7/1.
